The Red Raiders lose 2-1 to No.12/13 Arizona in series opener
TUCSON, Arizona – The No. 14 Red Raiders (34-10, 14-2) had its 11-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night as No. 12/13 Arizona (37-7, 14-5) took game one of the three-game series by a score of 2-1.
All three of the game's runs were scored in the first inning as both teams left runners on base late into the contest as Tech looked to even it up and the Wildcats were hoping to add insurance.
Arizona's Devyn Netz improved to 17-4 on the season after allowing three hits through 5.0 innings. NiJaree Canady went 6.0 innings allowing two runs and striking out seven batters. Canady eclipsed 200 strikeouts for the season for the third straight year.
Junior center fielder Mihyia Davis made a highlight-reel catch in left-center field when she leaped from a full sprint to make the diving catch that saved not only a hit, but also a run as the Wildcats had a runner on third with two outs before Davis ended the inning.
How it happened:
Tech got the scoring started after back-to-back singles from Davis and Hailey Toney got runners at first and third with one out before a bloop hit over the first baseman off the bat of Alexa Langeliers brought in Davis to make it a 1-0 game. Entering the contest, Tech was 22-0 when scoring in the first inning.
Arizona's first two batters went down without much fight before a single into left field gave the Wildcats a little life with two outs in their half of the first. Arizona's cleanup batter then took the first pitch she saw over the left field wall with some help from the wind as it was inches from staying in the ballpark. Nevertheless, the Wildcats had a 2-1 lead and would not relinquish it.
The Wildcats looked like they were about to add one more run in the second on a two-out double down the right field line, but Alana Johnson quickly fielded the ball, relayed it to Alexa Langeliers who darted it perfectly to Victoria Valdez who made the tag at home plate.
Canady struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth and the momentum carried over to the offense for a bit as Tech had runners on the corners thanks to singles by Valdez and Bailey Lindemuth with two outs but were not able to cash in.
Davis's incredible catch happened in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out triple by Arizona's Dakota Kennedy put pressure on Tech. Canady, along with the defense, stepped up as Lindemuth made a sharp player over at third to hold the speedy Kennedy and recorded the second out, eliminating any real small ball threat from the Wildcats three-hole hitter. After the second out, Davis finished off the great defense with an unbelievable catch.
Tech, unfortunately, wasn't able to turn that into offense as the game would end 2-1.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will have a chance to even the series tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT on FS1.
