The Red Raiders take game two 10-1 against No. 12/13 Arizona
TUCSON, Arizona – The bats were hot right out of the gate for the No. 14 Red Raiders (35-10, 15-2) in its game two victory over No. 12/13 Arizona (37-8, 14-6) on Friday night as Tech won 10-1 in five innings. This was the first time all season that the Wildcats had allowed 10 runs and the ninth time Tech has reached double-digit runs.
Tech used 10 hits to get 10 runs while allowing just one run on four hits thanks to Chloe Riassetto and NiJaree Canady's performances in the circle. Canady moves to 18-5 on the season and allowed just one hit while striking out three batters through 4.0 innings.
Mihyia Davis and Bailey Lindemuth both had two hits and an RBI as Demi Elder and Alana Johnson each recorded two RBI. Hailey Toney was excellent as shortstop, saving a few runs with her glove and reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Alexa Langeliers also reached base twice and came around to score once while Lauren Allred scored three times. Raegan Jennings and Logan Halleman also picked up hits along with Victoria Valdez who singled and then drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Wildcats snapped Tech's 11-game winning streak last night and the Red Raiders responded by snapping Arizona's 11-game winning streak against them to setup rubber match tomorrow on ESPN 2.
How it happened:
Davis led off the game with her third home run of the season to left center field to set a new career high for homers in a single season. Tech kept its foot on the gas with a pair of walks and a single which set up an RBI single by Johnson. Elder then came to the plate and was just a foot away from a grand slam, but was still able to get runs across with a sacrifice fly and some help from the Wildcats as they made an error on the relay to the plate to make it a 4-0 lead early.
The Wildcats responded with back-to-back singles but only mustered one run on a sacrifice fly as Riassetto was able to force soft contact to get out of the inning with minimal damage.
Tech was held scoreless in the second inning; the only time they would not add a run. Arizona had the Red Raiders on the ropes in their half of the second after they loaded the bases with one out and had the top of the order coming up to bat. Canady was able to get the second out on a swinging strikeout and then the final out was made by Toney at short who fielded a hard-hit ball off a short bounce to put up another zero.
The Red Raiders added two more runs in the third after Lindemuth singled and Langeliers drew a walk. Allred reached on a fielder's choice the next at-bat but was able to get runners on the corners with one out. Johnson then laid down a textbook sac-bunt on the first pitch she saw that scored Lindemuth and moved Allred to second. Elder then lined a ball into right field for a double to make a 6-1 game as Allred crossed the plate.
Arizona would go down in order in both the third and fourth innings as Canady kept the Wildcat's batters in check.
Lindemuth singled home Halleman in the fourth inning after she got on base with a single to open up the inning and would later advance to third on a bunt single by Davis and failed pick-off attempt.
A pair of Red Raider hits and Arizona errors allowed the final three runs to score for Tech. The bases were loaded with no outs after Allred reached on a single, Jennings singled to left field and Elder got hit by a pitch. Valdez then lined a ball to the shortstop that scored Allred and caused some confusion as the ball looked to be initially caught and turned into a double play was then ruled to be trapped and only one out recorded.
Halleman laid down a sac bunt to move runners into scoring position and another Wildcat error allowed Davis to reach first safely and Jennings to come home to make it 9-1. Toney then executed a perfect bunt right past the outstretched glove of the pitcher to get a hit and bring home the 10th and final run of the game.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will have a rubber match tomorrow against the Wildcats on ESPN 2 starting at 7:42 p.m. CT.
