Lady Raiders’ Big 12 Championship run ends in QFs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Despite a career performance from sophomore Loghan Johnson, the 14-seeded Texas Tech Lady Raiders lost in a close battle to the 3-seeded and No. 21-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 62-59, on Friday night at the T-Mobile Center in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships.
Johnson led Texas Tech (17-17) with a career-high of 17 points against the Cowgirls (25-5) after shooting a career-best 7-for-11 from the field (.636). She also added three rebounds, a steal and shot a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc in the game.
Totaling her team-leading 30th double-figure game this season was junior Jasmine Shavers with 16 points on 6-for-15 from the field (.400). Shavers led the team with five rebounds and three assists, while also connecting with a couple of threes. Junior Bailey Maupin recorded her 25th double-digit scoring game this season with 16 points, going 5-for-5 from the free throw line and adding four rebounds. The Lady Raiders shot 50 percent from behind the arc for the second straight game as they went 7-for-14 tonight from three. They held Oklahoma State to just 29.8 percent from the field (17-for-57) and 27.3 percent from beyond the arc (6-for-22).
Maupin continued where she left off – scoring the first three points of the game on an and-one play, then taking a charge immediately after to give Tech back the possession. Oklahoma State was able to make its first field goal of the game a little over three minutes into the quarter for a 3-2 score. The Cowgirls took a 4-3 lead, then Maupin banked in a jumper for the lead. Oklahoma State responded with a jumper of its own at 2:19. Then at the end of the quarter, Denae Fritz made an athletic block, then scored a triple to put Tech up 8-6. The Cowgirls scored right after to tie it 8-all after one.
Sarengbe Sanogo connected with two free throws to open the second period, then Shavers made a tough layup for the 12-8 advantage. Oklahoma State added two free throws, then Shavers made a mid-range jumper for the 14-10 lead. Johnson went on a huge run to help the Lady Raiders stay in it – scoring 12 points in the second quarter including two 3-pointers, to give Tech a 28-24 lead going into the half.
The Cowgirls hit a 3-pointer to begin the second half, getting within one point of the Lady Raiders. Tech had an answer with another mid-ranger from Shavers, but Oklahoma State made a layup thanks to a steal right after. Sanogo pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back up to take a 32-29 lead. However, the Cowgirls eventually tied the game at 34-34 with another layup from a steal. Tech answered right back after Jada Wynn nailed a triple as the Lady Raiders led 37-36 going into the media timeout at 2:19. Oklahoma State then took its first lead with a three with 1:09 left in the quarter, 39-38. But Fritz answered with a steal and dished it to Johnson for a layup to lead 40-39 at the end of the period.
Oklahoma State retook the lead to begin the final quarter after going on a 5-0 run to force a Texas Tech timeout. With the 46-40 lead, Shavers would cut the Tech deficit in half with a triple, but the Cowgirls were able to score four straight points to maintain their lead, 50-43. Out of the media timeout, Shavers made a layup to make it 51-47. But, the Cowgirls hit a three right after. Graduate Maya Peat grabbed an offensive rebound that led to a Maupin triple as Oklahoma State led 54-50. With 1:39 left in the game, Shavers made two free throws to put Tech within four points. Then with 35 seconds left, Shavers made her second three of the game for a 59-57 score. Maupin hit two free throws after Oklahoma State made some of its own as the Cowgirls led 61-59 with 22 seconds left. The Lady Raiders kept chipping away at the Cowgirls, but Oklahoma State would win the game by a close 62-59 score.
