LAWRENCE, Kansas – No. 10 Texas Tech celebrated in the Kansas locker room for only the second time in program history after earning a 78-73 win over the Jayhawks on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. Darrion Williams drilled the 15th 3-pointer of the game for the Red Raiders to give them a 76-73 lead and a pair of free throws by Chance McMillian with seven seconds remaining sealed it.
"Going into this game, I tried to be as genuine as I could with our team about how aggressive we'd have to be over the course of 40 minutes," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "You have to come out throwing the first punch. You can't let this game get on top of you because of the way they compete, can score in transition and physicality. You have to start that way and finish it too."
The Red Raiders (22-7, 13-5 Big 12) improved to 7-2 on the road and 2-22 all-time at Kansas after making 15 3-pointers and going 7-of-8 at the free-throw line. The team finished 15-for-43 (34.9 percent) from deep, attempting the most shots from beyond the arc in program history. The Jayhawks fell to 19-10 overall and to 10-8 in conference play after the only regular season matchup between the two teams this season. Tech, which saw seven players make at least one 3-pointer, has now made 15 or more 3s in three games and extended a program record with its 17th game of 10 or more.
"Credit to our guys on how aggressive we were," McCasland said. "It felt like even late when we weren't making shots and started to wear down, there was still a physical approach and didn't get discouraged. It says a lot about the culture of our program and what we fight for every day. We have a group that loves being around each other and I hope people saw that. Not just basketball, but they love being on this team and competing. No better place to compete than in Allen Fieldhouse."
JT Toppin led the Red Raiders with 21 points after going 9-for-15 from the field, while Anderson scored 15 points by matching a career-high with five 3-pointers and also had a career-high six assists. Williams added 14 points, four assists and a team-high nine rebounds. Chance McMillian finished with nine points and two steals and Elijah Hawkins provided four assists and eight points. Anderson was 5-for-10 on 3-pointers, while Williams, Toppin, Hawkins and Kerwin Walton hit two each. Toppin, who fouled out, finished the game with five rebounds.
"I feel like no one can stop us when we're fully healthy and together," Toppin said. "We're all unselfish."
"We're a force to be reckoned with," Williams added. "We have so many options to win the game. It speaks a lot about our team and how coach has us ready to go."
KJ Adams led KU with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Hunter Dickinson had 18 points and nine rebounds. KU, which missed its last five shots of the game, outscored Tech by a 44-20 margin in the paint but was only 4-for-18 on 3-pointers in the loss.
Up 11 at halftime, Walton hit a 3-pointer coming out of the break to give Tech its largest lead of the game at 51-37 before the Jayhawks made a comeback with an 11-0 run. Williams would hit a pair of free throws to stop the run before Hunter Dickinson tied the game at 53 with two free throws. KU claimed its first lead of the second half with a 3-pointer from David Coit with 8:30 remaining but a pair of Hawkins 3-pointers pushed Tech in front by a 66-63 margin. After a layup by Kansas, Hawkins would hit another 3-pointer and then a layup to start a 7-0 run. Anderson then gave Tech a 73-67 lead with another 3-pointer under four minutes, but another run by Kansas tied the game at 73-all with Dickinson making two more free throws. Williams would hit what proved to be the game-winning shot, burying a 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining before McMillian buried two free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Texas Tech took a 48-37 lead into halftime after going 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range with Anderson hitting four and six players making at least one. Kansas was only 2-for-7 from 3-point range. Toppin led the Red Raiders with 18 points and five rebounds after going 8-for-12 from the field, including making 2-of-4 from deep. Anderson was 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and had 12 points and four assists going into the break. Williams provided seven points and McMillian had five with one 3-pointer each. Hawkins had four assists and a steal through 20 minutes. Walton made Tech's first 3-pointer on its opening possession and an 11-0 run had the Red Raiders leading 16-11 with three 3s during the run. The 11-0 run came after a 7-0 run by the Jayhawks and started with a Toppin 3-pointer after a Federiko offensive rebound. Anderson made his first 3 of the game for a 21-13 lead and Williams was the sixth to hit from deep for a 24-17 advantage. Toppin got into double figures with back-to-back baskets before Anderson drilled two straight 3-pointers to give the Red Raiders their 11-point halftime lead. Toppin's 18 points matched his halftime-high this season after he also had 18 points against Arizona State. KU went into the break with a 24-12 scoring advantage in the paint and was led by Adams and Dickinson who had eight points each.
