Red Raiders ranked No. 11 in AP Top 25

LUBBOCK – Associated Press Top 25 Men's Basketball Top 25 voters moved Texas Tech back one spot to No. 11 in the first release of the season despite a pair of wins last week. The Red Raiders were at No. 10 in the AP Preseason Top 25 for their highest preseason ranking in program history. They are now set to play No. 14 Illinois at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois. The Fighting Illini (2-0) moved up three spots in the poll after opening their season with wins over Jackson State and Florida Gulf Coast.
The Red Raiders (2-0) opened their season with a pair of dominating wins over Lindenwood and Sam Houston last week, starting with a 98-60 victory over Lindenwood last Tuesday and then a 98-77 win over Sam Houston on Friday night. Tech set a new program record with 17 made 3-pointers in the season opener and comes into the second week of the season shooting 29-for-73 (39.7 percent) from beyond the arc as a team. Christian Anderson is averaging 26.0 points and 9.0 assists per game through two games while JT Toppin missed the opener with a lower body injury but made his debut a memorable one with 31 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high four assists against Sam Houston. Donovan Atwell is averaging 20.5 points per game and leads the Red Raiders by shooting 12-for-24 on 3-pointers with a pair of games with six 3-pointers in each. LeJuan Watts also missed the opener with injury but made his Tech debut against Sam Houston with 11 points and six rebounds while Tyeree Bryan is averaging 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds through two starts.
Houston (2-0) jumped up to No. 1 in the nation in the AP Top 25 and is followed by Purdue (2-0), UConn (2-0), Duke (2-0) and Arizona (2-0) in the top five. The Big 12 is also represented by No. 7 BYU, No. 16 Iowa State and No. 25 Kansas.
Texas Tech will return from its road game at Illinois to host Milwaukee at 7 p.m. on Friday at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders are on a 40 game non-conference home winning streak entering the matchup.
