LUBBOCK – Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has officially announced the signing of DaKari Spear to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement to play for the Red Raiders next season. From The Colony, Texas, Spear is a 6-foot-5 guard who currently plays at Dynamic Prep and Overtime Elite after playing three years at The Colony High School.
A four-star recruit, Spear is a top 10 shooting guard nationally and ESPN has him as the seventh best recruit in the state after he averaged 22.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a junior at The Colony High. ESPN has him ranked No. 60 nationally and as the No. 6 shooting guard in the recruiting class.
Currently playing for FaZe in Overtime Elite, Spear is averaging 22 points per game and is shooting 43 percent on 3-pointers. He recently put up a 34-point performance by shooting 5-for-8 on 3-pointers and was named a top performer at the GASO Prep/Juco Showcase. Over the summer he commanded attention and was named an EYBL Peach Jam Standout.
At The Colony, Spear earned Class 5A All-State honors along with being named the unanimous District 12-5A Most Valuable Player. His junior season also saw him honored with All-Region and District 12-5A All-Academic nods. He matched The Colony's all-time single-season scoring record with 770 points last season and surpassed 1,800 in his high school career before transferring to Dynamic Prep this season. Among his season highlights last year, he had 43 points, six rebounds and two steals against Duncanville in the finale of the Noble Classic. He is The Colony's second all-time leading scorer with 1,819 points and also with 197 made 3-pointers. As a freshman he earned Class 5A District 9 Newcomer of the Year and earned District 9 Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Spear helped lead The Colony to the Class 5A Regional Semifinals last season and Class 5A Regional Finals as a junior.
Spear committed to the Red Raiders on October 13 and posted on his social media, saying: "Time to bring that energy to Lubbock and make some history. Let's get it." He chose the Red Raiders over his final five of Syracuse, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech after narrowing down multiple other offers from throughout the nation.
