The Red Raiders settled for a point despite a 20-3 margin
LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite enjoying a 20-3 advantage in shots, No. 15/6 Texas Tech ultimately could not break through settling for a scoreless draw against UCF, Thursday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Despite 11 shots from Taylor Zdrojewski (7) and Peyton Parsons (4), Texas Tech (13-2-3, 7-1-3 Big 12) did not find the back of the net for a goal [that counted] for just the third time all season.
Ultimately the Red Raiders saw a late opportunity with less than a minute to go get called back for offsides.
The sequence ultimately ended with Zdrojewski burying a rebound off a shot from Emma Torres that was saved by UCFs (11-2-5, 5-1-5 Big 12) Genesis Perez Watson, but after a VAR review, the offsides was upheld.
And with the clock dwindling down inside of 20 seconds, the Red Raiders had one last latch ditch effort, when the seventh and final Zdrojewski shot of the night, a rising header of a corner kick service with less than 10 seconds left. The header was ultimately punched high of the goal by Perez Watson as time expired.
In goal, goalkeeper Faith Nguyen made two saves including a highlight reel stop on Tyra Eriksen one second into the eighth minute to earn her 19th career clean sheet as a Red Raider.
That moves Nguyen into a tie with Marissa Zucchetto for fourth all-time on the Red Raiders all-time clean sheet list. The goalkeeper also tied Lauren Watson for sixth all-time in single season lean sheets with nine. Â
Nguyen's save in the eighth minute combined with a stop later in the match pushed her to within three stops of trying Zuchetto for ninth on the all-time saves list.
With tonight's +17 shot margin the Red Raiders close the regular season a perfect 18-for-18 in outshooting opponents and closed the year by outshooting opponents 331-to-138 (+193).
The Red Raiders with tonight's draw also did close the regular season unbeaten at home for the second-time in three seasons, as Tech went 6-0-3 in its nine home matches this season.
Tech went a perfect 10-0-0 in 2023 at the John Walker Soccer Complex and are now 26-2-5 at home (2023) since the installation of the grass surface.

HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"We knew we weren't going to play poorly at home. Another undefeated regular season at Ft. Walker and we're pretty proud of the performance all year. And certainly, tonight when the game was on the line in the second half, although I thought UCF played really well in the first part of the second half, and took the game from us. We got the ball back from them and it was 20-to-25 minutes with one attack after another. I was proud that we never quit, let down and we never acted like we were okay with a tie. Clearly our opponent was fine with it. It didn't do much to change the standings, and we were the aggressor tonight. And I told the girls on a normal night with those kinds of chances and those opportunities and that amount of ability to serve it from the flank usually results in goals for us. And tonight unfortunately it didn't. You out-shoot someone 20-to-3 one should go in, but only five of those 20 were on frame." UCF gives up the longer shot as opposed to the penetrating passes and runs, but we got behind them a dozen times with our wide backs. And those are the chances we're going to regret because when you turn the corner and get behind them now, you're sliding balls across to hopefully runners in the box. We just served everything to the goalkeeper or near post and they cleared it away. It wasn't a great day of timing the runs and service. We were just off enough to create a difference because I certainly know we created enough chances to win the game. Heck their goalkeeper made a save with one second left to preserve it. The quality of that corner kick service under that pressure with countdown at nine. And then for Z to get it on frame with one on the countdown and for their keeper to push it over right when the clock got to zero made for a pretty dramatic finish. But it spoke to how we were on the front foot and pushing for the win." Â
