
Tech takes on Cougars in Houston this Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders head to Houston, Texas to take on the Houston Cougars this Wednesday, January 22 at 1 p.m. in the Fertitta Center. Texas Tech leads the Cougars with an all-time 42-15 record. Winning the last four matchups, the Lady Raiders got the 74-59 victory over the Cougars on December 22, 2024 in the teams' first meeting this season.
Junior Bailey Maupin is averaging a team-best 16.1 points per game in conference play and is second on the team with 14.0 points per game this season. She recorded a career-high of 28 points in the Big 12 opener against Houston after going 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-5 from the three. She then posted 21 points at No. 11 Kansas State to lead the team. Once again, Maupin had a 20-plus point game in conference when she led the game with 23 points against TCU on Jan. 11, while also leading with a career-high of eight rebounds. Most recently, she scored 18 points against the BYU Cougars last Saturday.
The Lady Raiders are starting to get to the free throw line more and more each game - currently ranking 45th nationally and fourth in the Big 12 with 13.90 free throws made per game. In Tech's last game against BYU on Saturday, the Lady Raiders made a season-high of 23 free throws while taking 34 attempts. The 34 attempts were the most since November 26, 2022 when Tech had 38 attempts against Mercer. Junior Jasmine Shavers posted back-to-back games with 10 attempts, going 19-for-20 in the last two contests, while Maupin is 19-for-20 at the line in the last three games.
Both Shavers and Maupin have been the top two Lady Raiders to draw fouls for the team. Maupin ranks 37th in the nation and fourth in the Big 12 with 80 free throws made, while Shavers is 41st and fifth with 79 made free throws. Shavers is shooting a team-best 86.8 percent from the free-throw line, which is third in conference and 42nd in the NCAA. Against Iowa State on January 14, Shavers went a perfect 10-for-10 from the line which is the most free throws made without a miss in her career. In addition, Maupin leads the team with 100 free throw attempts, which is good for 43rd in the nation and fourth in conference.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Houston Cougars are 5-13 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 play this season. Their five wins have come against Houston Christian, Alcorn State, Southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi Valley State and No. 24 Oklahoma State. Most recently, the Cougars lost to Baylor, No. 22 Utah, BYU and Arizona State. As a team, the Cougars average 60.7 points per game and are allowing 65.1 points per game. Shooting 36.3 percent from the field, Houston is totaling 33.6 rebounds per game and 10.4 assists per game. There are three Cougars who average double-figures this season – Gigi Cooke (12.2), Laila Blair (12.1) and Eylia Love (11.1). On the rebounding side, Love leads the team with 6.6 per game, followed by Leilani Augmon with 5.4 and Peyton McFarland with 4.4.
