
Cyclones defeat Lady Raiders in Ames

AMES, Iowa – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders held the Iowa State Cyclones to zero 3-pointers, snapping a NCAA record 945-game streak dating back to 1995, but the Cyclones won the game by a 71-58 score on Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Texas Tech (12-7, 1-5 Big 12) didn't allow a single Iowa State 3-pointer, the first time since Feb. 19, 1995Â the Cyclones (13-6, 4-2 Big 12) haven't made a three in a game. Leading the Lady Raiders in scoring was Jasmine Shavers, who posted 21 points for her team-leading 16th double-figure scoring game this year. She also went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and picked up three rebounds.
Loghan Johnson got her third 10-plus point game this season with 12 on the night after shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Achol Magot picked up a career high in minutes (10) and rebounds (5), ranking second on the team in boards. Leading the Lady Raiders on the glass was Sarengbe Sanogo, who had seven rebounds and added two blocks and two steals. Denae Fritz would tie her season high in threes as she collected eight points with a rebound.
Iowa State scored the first six points of the game, but Texas Tech chipped away, getting within one point of the Cyclones thanks to a couple made free throws by Shavers and a 3-pointer from Johnson. The Cyclones would make a jumper and got fouled on the play right before the media timeout, to lead 9-5. The Lady Raiders would follow with the next five points when Denae Fritz made a three and Bailey Maupin scored a tough layup for the lead, 10-9. Iowa State connected with two free throws to retake the lead, but the Lady Raiders got two back from Johnson to hold a 12-11 advantage. Johnson hit another 3-pointer then Shavers made a layup through traffic to give Tech a 17-13 lead at the end of the period.
Johnson continued to dominate, scoring a layup to begin the second quarter. Then, the Cyclones made the next eight points to take the lead at 21-19 and force a Texas Tech timeout. The Cyclones pushed their run to 12-0 to hold a 25-19 advantage. Tech was able to get a steal and a fastbreak layup, then Maya Peat scored a free throw to make it 29-22. The Lady Raiders got the next four points thanks to Shavers at the free throw line to cut the deficit to three, 29-26. Both teams went back-and-forth to close the quarter, as Iowa State led 31-28 at the end of it.
Shavers gave the Lady Raiders the lead at the start of the second half after making a mid-range jumper, then grabbing a steal on the inbound play and immediately scoring to make it 32-31. Iowa State would go on a 4-0 run before Peat scored a second-chance jumper. The Cyclones got the next three points to hold a 38-34 advantage heading into the media timeout. However, the Cyclones continued their run, scoring seven of the next nine points for a 45-36 advantage with 3:02 left. Peat scored with 40 seconds left in the period, but the Cyclones led by a 51-38 score.
The Cyclones maintained their run, scoring three points to begin the final quarter, but Johnson stopped it with a layup. Both teams went scoreless for a little over a minute, until both Shavers and Adlee Blacklock nailed a couple of 3-pointers to make it 56-46. Iowa State answered with an 8-3 run, but Fritz was able to get an open look in the corner for a three to make it 64-52. However, Iowa State remained in the lead as they won the game, 71-58.
