Red Raiders fall to No. 17 Oklahoma

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders opened conference play at home on Thursday evening as the No. 17-ranked Oklahoma Sooners took the match, 7-0, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Oklahoma (13-2, 1-0 Big 12) went out to an early lead after winning the doubles point against Texas Tech (8-9, 0-1 Big 12). The Sooners got their first doubles victory whenever Jordan Hasson and Mark Mandlik defeated Reed Collier and Takeyasu Sekiguchi at court two, 6-2.
Then, Oklahoma clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at court three after Asahi Harazaki and Hank Trondson beat Lorenzo Esquici and Olle Wallin. At court one, No. 41 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak were tied with Baptiste Anselmo and Alex Martinex when their match went unfinished.
The Sooners took a quick lead after winning all six first sets. Oklahoma held a 2-0 advantage when Luis Alvarez defeated Niksa Arsic at court four, 6-1, 6-3. The Sooners' third point came at court one when No. 20 Martinez defeated No. 56 Wallin by a 6-3, 7-6 (4) score.
Clinching the match for the Sooners was Mandlik at court six as he overtook Sekiguchi, 6-2, 7-5. Oklahoma held a 5-0 advantage after No. 107 Kholo Montsi won his match over Collier at court two, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Two Red Raiders were able to force third sets in Esquici and Pawlak at courts three and five, respectively. Pawlak and Justin Schlageter were battling it out as the Sooner won the first set, 6-4, before Pawlak evened it up with a 7-6 (2) breaker. In the 10-point tiebreak, Schlageter took a 9-3 lead, but Pawlak kept chipping away after winning four-straight. But, the Sooner would win the remaining point to claim the match with a 10-7 tiebreaker.
Esquici and Jordan Hasson were grinding it out as Hasson won the first set by a 6-2 score. Esquici fought back to claim the second set, 6-4, and tied things up. In the third, Hasson held a 4-2 advantage, but Esquici would come back to win three-straight games and make it 5-4 in his favor. Hasson evened it up at 5-5 before the two players forced a tiebreaker. Hasson went ahead 4-2 in the breaker, then held on to win it, 7-6 (4), to give Oklahoma its seventh point of the match.
Texas Tech continues Big 12 play with a match against No. 25 Oklahoma State on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
