Tech drops match to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell in their final match of the Ed Collins Spring Classic to host team, San Diego State, by a 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Complex.
The Aztecs (10-3) began the match by winning the doubles point over the Red Raiders (8-8). First, San Diego State posted a 6-2 win at court three before clinching the point with a 6-4 win at court two. At court one, No. 32-ranked Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak were leading 5-4 when their match went unfinished.
In singles, the Aztecs held a 2-1 advantage whenever they got a victory at court five by a 6-2, 6-3 score. However, No. 122-ranked senior Reed Collier put a point on the board for the Red Raiders after winning at court one. Collier was able to take an early 3-1 lead in set one, before the Aztec tied it at 3-3. The two went back-and-forth until Collier won it by a 6-4 score.
Then in the following set, SDSU took a 3-0 lead but Collier would win four of the next five games to even it at 5-all. They would go into a tiebreaker, where the Red Raider dominated with the 7-6 (1) score.
San Diego State extended its lead after getting a 6-4, 6-3 victory at court three, then clinched the match with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at court six.
Texas Tech begins conference play with a home match against the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday, March 21 at 5 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
