Tech opens Big 12 play against Houston

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders continue play at home with their first Big 12 game of the season against the Houston Cougars on Sunday, December 22 at 2 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech leads the all-time series against Houston with a 41-15 record. Last year, the Lady Raiders defeated the Cougars three times, their last win coming in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on March 7, 2024 by a 74-60 score.
Last season, the Lady Raiders opened Big 12 at Houston, getting the win against the Cougars, 79-71. The last time Tech opened conference with a win was in the 2014-15 season when the Lady Raiders defeated TCU on January 4, 2015 by a 52-37 score. Texas Tech has not opened conference play with back-to-back wins since the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, but are looking to do that this season against Houston.
Junior Bailey Maupin has been heating up over the last two contests. She is averaging 23 points per game and is shooting 45.5 percent from the field (10-for-22). In addition, she has gone 24-for-30 at the free throw line (.800) after drawing 17 fouls. Last game against Lamar, Maupin scored 21 points and hit a new career high in free throws made with 15. At Arkansas, she shot 50 percent from the field (7-for-14) with a season high of 25 points, seven field goals, 14 field goal attempts and five rebounds.
On Wednesday afternoon against Lamar, Tech made a season-high of 23 free throws on 79.1 shooting, raising their total free throw percentage to 71.4 percent. Maupin has drawn the most fouls on the team the past three games, as she now ranks 33rd nationally and fourth in the Big 12 with 65 free throw attempts. She also ranks 28th nationally and fourth in conference with 50 made free throws.
Texas Tech is second in the Big 12 and 32nd in the NCAA with 29.2 bench points per game. The Lady Raiders had their most bench points against Missouri State, totaling 47 points in the game, more than half of the total points scored by the team that game (72). Texas Tech has also scored 20 or more bench points in the last six contests, totaling 38 most recently against Lamar. Sophomore Loghan Johnson led the way from the bench after posting a career-high of 16 points against the Cardinals.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Houston Cougars are coming into the game with a 4-7 record. Their four wins have come against Mississippi Valley State (98-40), Southeastern Louisiana (70-65), Alcorn State (73-48) and Houston Christian (54-52). Some losses were against UT Arlington (57-61), Minnesota (44-61) and Georgia (47-61). As a team, the Cougars are averaging 61.1 points per game and holding opponents to just 59.2 points per game. Shooting 37.1 percent from the field, Houston is averaging 35.5 rebounds per game and 10.3 assists per game. Three Cougars are averaging double-figure scoring so far – Laila Blair (11.9), Gigi Cooke (11.8) and Eylia Love (11.4). On the rebounding side, Love leads the team with 7.8 per game while Leilani Augmon is right behind with 6.2.
