LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are back at home with a contest against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on Tuesday, December 3 at 6 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech leads the all-time series against SFA with an 8-3 record. Tech is on an eight-game winning streak against the Ladyjacks as the two teams last played on November 28, 2018, with the Lady Raiders winning by a 77-69 score.
The Lady Raiders had back-to-back games with their best shooting so far this season. In last Friday's contest against Gonzaga, Texas Tech shot what was then a season-high, 46.4 percent from the field (26-for-56). The following night against Missouri State, the Lady Raiders shot 58.3 percent after going 28-for-48 from the field. The last time Tech shot above 50 percent from the field was in January against conferÂence-foe Houston in Lubbock.
Four Lady Raiders hit major milestones while at the Paradise Jam tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands. First, freshman Bird Martin scored her first career points after nailing a 3-pointer against Gonzaga. In the same game, graduate Maya Peat recorded her 700th career rebound. In addition, both Jasmine Shavers and Bailey Maupin eclipsed the 900 career points mark after totaling 32 and 14 points, respectively, against Missouri State.
The junior from Mesquite, Texas not only surpassed 900 points last week, but she also recorded a new career high in points, field goals and free throws against Missouri State. Shavers' 32 points is the first time in her career to score over 30 in a game, while her 10 field goals and 10 made free throws are also career bests. Shavers is 27th nationally and third in conference with 125 field goal attempts and has the sixth-most points in the Big 12 with 141. Shavers was the lone Lady Raider to be named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team last week.
Texas Tech is atop the Big 12 and 34th in the NCAA with 29.7 bench points per game. The Lady Raiders had their most bench points last contest against Missouri State, totaling 47 points in the game, more than half of the total points scored by the team (72). The Lady Raiders are only allowing opponents 56.2 points per game, ranking 60th in the country and fifth in the Big 12 in that category. Tech is also forcing 22.78 turnovers per game which ranks 27th in the NCAA and third in the conference. In addition, the Lady Raiders are holding teams to just 25.7 percent from beyond the arc, ranking second in the Big 12 and 44th nationally in that category.
Against Gonzaga, the Lady Raiders held the Bulldogs to 20 points beÂlow their season average in points, while forcing 24 turnovers (seven more than their average) and adding 15 steals in the game. Florida State came into last Thursday night's game averaging over 100 points per game, but the Lady Raiders held the Seminoles to their season low in points with 70. In addition, Tech held Florida State to under 20 points in three quarters of the contest, the most in a game this season for the Noles. Forcing 19 Florida State turnovers in the game, Tech only allowed the Noles to score just four 3-pointers in the game, which marks their lowest total all season at that point.
