Lady Raiders travel to Utah for game against BYU

LUBBOCK, Texas – Coming off a ranked win at home, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders travel to Provo, Utah for a matchup against the BYU Cougars on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. CT in the Marriott Center. This will only be the third meeting between the two teams as they last faced on Dec. 30, 1988. Tech leads the series 2-1.
On Wednesday, Texas Tech picked up its first ranked win of the season after taking care of No. 24 Iowa State in the United Supermarkets Arena by a 71-63 score. In the game, three Lady Raiders collected double-figure scoring in Bailey Maupin (16), Rhyle McKinney (15) and Jasmine Shavers (15). McKinney was on fire at the 3-point line after hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, all in the first half. Jordyn Merritt almost recorded a double-double after tallying eight points and 10 boards, while Kilah Freelon posted eight points and four rebounds against the Cyclones.
The Lady Raiders are led in scoring by Maupin with 15.2 points per game, followed by Shavers with 14.6. Freelon is third in scoring as she totals 8.5 while leading the team with 5.7 rebounds per game. Shavers and Merritt are just behind with 5.6 and 5.5 rebounds per game, respectively. Maupin also leads the team with 69 assists and Merritt has a team-high 20 blocks.
As a team, Texas Tech's defense is holding opponents to 59.6 points per game and also forcing 20.32 turnovers per game, which is good for 33rd in the nation. In addition, the Lady Raiders are 45th in the NCAA and first in the conference by shooting 76.1 percent from the free-throw line. They also total 14.89 free throws a game, ranking 35th nationally in that category. The Lady Raiders are holding teams to 33.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and averaging 14.2 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The BYU Cougars are coming into the game with an 11-7 overall record and a 1-4 record in conference play. Some key wins have come against Wake Forest (67-44), Utah State (72-66), Boise State (65-50) and Cincinnati (68-58). The Cougars have lost games against Oklahoma State (50-82), Houston (69-79), Iowa State (75-80) and Oklahoma (63-75). As a team, the Cougars are ranked 19th in the nation with a 37.3 three-point percentage, while also ranking 44th nationally with a 45.4 field-goal percentage. The Cougars are averaging 68.9 points per game and hold opponents to just 66.1 points per game. In addition, they total 15.9 assists per game and 18.0 turnovers per game. BYU has three players who average double-figure scoring – Lauren Gustin (15.5), Kailey Woolston (13.7) and Amari Whiting (11.1). Gustin also averages a double-double as she totals a team-best 15.2 rebounds per game, followed by Whiting with 4.9.
