Big 12-SEC Challenge up next for Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team is taking a trip to Stillwater, Okla., for the Big 12-SEC Challenge on Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24. Players competing in the tournament include junior Sebastian Abboud, freshman Jonas Gundacker, junior Takeyasu Sekiguchi and junior Tyler Stewart.
These four Red Raiders participated in the Midland Racquet Club Invitational earlier in the month on Sept. 8-10, where the team totaled nine singles wins. Stewart won three singles matches to get to the semifinals of the tournament, while Abboud claimed a couple victories for a quarterfinals appearance.
Stewart beat Jared Horwood (Arkansas) in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, before overtaking Benedikt Emesz (Arkansas) in the Round of 16, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-3. He then earned a semifinals spot when he defeated Oklahoma's Justin Schlageter, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Abboud took on Mark Mandlik (Oklahoma) in round one and beat the Sooner, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, then got to the quarterfinals with a victory against Lucas Brown (Texas), 6-4, 6-4.
Sekiguchi went 3-0 in the Bronze Draw to win it as he picked up wins over Ritesh Patil (Texas A&M), Horwood and Jett Middleton (Boise State). Gundacker posted his first career win as a Red Raider when he defeated Texas A&M Aggie, Grant Lothringer, in three sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (8).
The Red Raiders will begin doubles on Friday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. with singles to follow. Teams competing in the tournament are Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
