WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Highlighted by a ranked singles win from senior Reed Collier, the Texas Tech Red Raiders closed out the Wake Forest Hidden Duals with seven singles wins and three doubles victories on Sunday morning.
Collier was the one of two Red Raiders to go undefeated in singles this weekend. Day one, he took on Clemson's Mark Pitts, and after going down 6-2 in the first set, Collier turned it around and won the next two sets to claim the match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
On day two, Collier picked up his first ranked win of the season after taking down No. 110 Sebastien Collard of Michigan State in straight sets. Collier earned the first set win in a close breaker, 7-6 (5), before dominating in the next set, 6-2.
On the final day, Collier was in a battle with Cornell's Felipe Pinzon. The Red Raider fell in the first set, 6-2, but answered back with a bagel, 6-0, in the second set. The third set was forced into a tiebreak after Collier saved three match points to tie it at 5-5, then won in a tough tiebreak, 7-6 (7), for his third singles victory of the weekend.
Junior Piotr Pawlak had a strong weekend in North Carolina after winning all three singles matches and adding two doubles victories with Collier. In singles, Pawlak competed against Cornell's Muhammad Dossani on the first day of the tournament, pulling out a decisive straight-set victory by a 6-1, 6-4 score.
Pawlak then recorded another win on day two when he defeated Michigan State's Graydon Lair in two sets. The Red Raider earned a 7-5 first set victory, then won the next set, 6-3, to claim the match. Taking on Aman Sharma (Cornell) on the final day, Pawlak would drop the first, and his only set of the tournament, by a 6-1 score to Sharma. He bounced back and took the tiebreaker in set two, 7-6 (4), then finished off the Cornell player with a 6-3 third set.
Both Collier and Pawlak paired up for doubles on the weekend and won two of three matches. The duo defeated the Clemson pairing of Marko Mesarovic and Matt Pitts, 6-4, then took down Cornell's Samuel Paquette and Sharma, 6-3, on the final day of competition.
In singles, Olle Wallin added the team's seventh win of the tournament when he overtook Clemson's Noa Vukadin, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Then, Wallin and Lorenzo Esquici paired up to defeat Clemson's tandem of Vukadin and Maxwell Smith, 6-4.
Up next, the Red Raiders travel to Stillwater, Okla., for the Big 12-SEC Challenge on Sept. 22-24.
