EUGENE, Ore. – Thanks to dominant singles play on the night, the No. 40 Texas Tech Red Raiders posted their second win in as many days after downing the BYU Cougars, 4-1, on Friday night at the Student Tennis Center.
The Cougars (3-8) went up early when they claimed the doubles point. Tech (11-6) picked up the first doubles win of the match when No. 45 Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier defeated Jack Barnett and Mateo Vereau, 6-4, at court one. But, the Cougars would get two wins at courts two and three to secure the point and take the early lead.
The Red Raiders answered back with solid singles play, winning all six first sets, then earning four-straight victories to clinch the match over BYU.
First, Isaac Arevalo collected a win at court three against Vereau, only dropping two games, for a 6-1, 6-1 score. Azoidis added his second win of the night when he beat Redd Owen at court six in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Lorenzo Esquici was one match away from clinching again, but he would put up Tech's third point after overtaking Dominik Jakovljevic at court five by a 6-4, 6-1 score. It would be Franco Ribero who clinched the match for Tech, his third of the season, after he overpowered Wally Thayne at court two, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Both Olle Wallin and Reed Collier were up in their third sets when the match was finished. Wallin was ahead of Barnett at one, 6-2, 3-6, 4-2, while Collier was up on Zach Fuchs at court four, 6-2, 4-6, 4-3.
