Tech hosts Sam Houston on Tuesday night

LUBBOCK, Texas – The first team in the nation to nine wins and sporting an unblemished overall record, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (9-0) will welcome the Sam Houston Bearkats for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Texas Tech, who is currently receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 Women's Basketball Poll, is coming off a dominant showing against the Houston Christian Huskies last Friday. In the 79-34 victory, senior Jordyn Merritt collected a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while three additional players recorded double-figure scoring – Jazmaine Lewis (12), Kilah Freelon (10) and Elina Arika (10).
The Lady Raiders' defense has been smothering this season as the team is holding opponents to just 53.2 points per game - which is ranked 29th nationally. Tech forces 21.33 turnovers per game and sits 33rd in the country in that category.
The Lady Raiders have held teams to single-digit scoring in a quarter 11 times this season and set a record when they didn't allow a single point in the first period against Texas A&M-Commerce. Additionally, Tech held HCU to 34 points, which is the lowest outing for an opponent since 2010, while also holding them to single digit scoring in the first three periods.
The Lady Raiders are led in scoring by both Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers, who total 15.9 and 14.4 ppg respectively. Freelon leads the team with 7.1 rpg and Maupin posts a team-high 33 assists. Texas Tech is averaging 73.2 points per game and a .432 field-goal percentage.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Sam Houston is 4-2 on the season with victories over Houston Christian (67-65), Schreiner (96-43), Texas State (66-62) and Florida A&M (65-62). Their two losses are against Houston (65-106) and UTSA (56-63). Sam Houston has four players who average double-figure scoring for the Bearkats - Sydnee Kemp (13.8 ppg), Diana Rosenthal (12.8), Raanee Smith (11.7) and Kaylee Jefferson (10.7). Smith is also averaging 10 rebounds per game as she has two double-doubles on the season. The assist leader for the team is Jefferson, who has 11 through six games. The Bearkats are coached by Ravon Justice who is in her eighth overall season and sixth with Sam Houston. She boasts an all-time record of 110-100 in her career and n 82-66 record with the Kats.
