
Lady Raiders compete at Las Vegas Thanksgiving Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – For the first time this season, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders are on the road as they compete in the Las Vegas Thanksgiving Classic tournament on Nov. 24-25 at South Point Arena. First, Tech will take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 8:30 p.m. CT on Friday, before facing the Santa Clara Broncos at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Texas Tech (5-0) has played Rutgers five times in program history and holds the 3-2 series lead. They last met on Nov. 30, 2013 as the Scarlet Knights defeated Tech, 61-52. Santa Clara and the Lady Raiders faced each other four times in program history, as the two teams boast two wins against one another. Their last meeting was on Dec. 12, 2015 as the Broncos won by a 75-70 score.
Tech is coming off a gritty, 63-58 win against the UTSA Roadrunners on Monday evening. In the game, the Lady Raiders forced 11 turnovers in the second quarter while also forcing 18 turnovers in the first half, which is the most in a half in at least 10 years. Tech also forced 31 total turnovers against the Roadrunners which is the most this season and the first time since 2019 that Tech forced more than 25 in a game.
Both Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers did something no other teammates have done this century against UTSA as they are the first Lady Raider duo to record double-figure scoring in the first five games of the season in the 21st century. Maupin posted a team-leading 18 points in the game against UTSA, while adding six rebounds, a team-high four assists and a steal in a career-best 38 minutes played. Shavers added 15 points on the Monday night with two rebounds, two assists and three takeaways.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Rutgers is 3-3 on the season with victories over Monmouth (56-51), Wagner (86-43) and Saint Francis (80-51). Their losses come against Auburn (56-76), Seton Hall (63-82) and Fairfield (54-78). The Scarlet Knights are led in scoring by Destiny Adams with 13.5 ppg, followed by Kaylene Smikle with 12.2. In addition, Adams totals 9.2 rbg, 13 steals and seven blocks. The Scarlet Knights are tallying 65.8 ppg while holding opponents to 63.5 ppg and a .364 shooting percentage. The team also totals 43.2 rbg, 12.0 apg and 8.3 spg.
Santa Clara is 5-1 on the season with key victories against Hawai'i (62-51), San Jose State (55-47), Oregon (89-50) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (75-54). The Broncos' only loss comes against California on Nov. 8 by a 56-71 score. The Broncos are led in scoring by Tess Heal with 18.0 ppg followed by Olivia Pollerd with 11.0 ppg. Marya Hudgins leads the Broncos with 7.5 rpg, while Heal leads with 24 assists and Ashley Hiraki leads with 16 steals.
