LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team serves up its fall season this weekend in Austin at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Lady Raiders start the weekend on Friday at 2 p.m. against LSU, then face either Texas or Iowa on Saturday at 2 p.m.
ABOUT ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND
The 12th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend takes place January 24-27, 2020, with 60 women's teams traveling to 15 host sites around the country.
Each of the 15 regional host institutions will welcome three other teams for a single-elimination event, with the winners advancing to the National Team Indoors. Illinois will serve as host for the National Team Indoors in 2020, guaranteeing them an automatic bid into the championships.
The ITA Kickoff Weekend is unique in college athletics in that each regional competition is determined via the Kickoff Weekend Draft, where each team selects which regional they wish to participate in. Selections are made in order of the final 2018-2019 Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
BREAKING DOWN THE 2020 LADY RAIDERS
Head coach Todd Petty returns five players from the 2018-19 campaign, while also bringing a handful of talented freshmen into the fold. The Lady Raiders return Kennedy Bridgforth, Nell Miller and Olivia Peet who each saw action in the team's dual season in 2019, helping Tech to its program-best eighth-straight NCAA Tournament bid.
Petty has also recruited the nation's No. 4 recruiting class, led by fall enrollees Margarita Skriabina and Lisa Mays, as well as Bojana Marinkov who just arrived in Lubbock for the spring semester.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
Coming off wins over Northwestern State and Southern last weekend to open the dual season, LSU is receiving votes in the latest ITA top 25. LSU is led by Taylor Bridges, ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA singles rankings, No. 61 Safiya Carrington and No. 105 Paris Corley. The Tigers went 17-12 overall in 2018-19 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
ABOUT THE LONGHORNS
A familiar foe for the Lady Raiders, the Longhorns enter the 2020 season as the Big 12 preseason favorite according to league coaches, and ranked No. 7 in the country. Three UT players are featured in the Top 100 of the latest Oracle/ITA national singles rankings: Anna Turati (No. 4), Lexi Ryngler (No. 43) and Fernanda Labraña (No. 98). Texas went 19-5 a season ago, winning the Big 12 regular season title at 9-0 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
Iowa enters this weekend's matches at 1-1 following a split weekend in which the Hawkeyes defeated South Alabama, 6-1, before falling to Florida International, 4-1. The Hawkeyes are led by lone senior Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell, a three-time All-Big-Ten selection. Iowa is coming off a 13-12 season in 2018-19.
LOOKING AHEAD
Texas Tech will travel to Mississippi next weekend for a pair of battles against Ole Miss and Mississippi State in Oxford on Friday and Saturday.
