Red Raiders In The Pros - Week 11 - Texas Tech Red Raiders

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball has six former standouts on major league squads in the third month of the 2017 season, with 25 more in different levels of the minor league system.

The six Red Raiders in MLB include: Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies), Daniel Coulombe (Oakland Athletics), Nathan Karns (Kansas City Royals), A.J. Ramos (Miami Marlins), Josh Tomlin (Cleveland Indians) and Kelby Tomlinson (San Francisco Giants).

Twenty-five additional Red Raider standouts have started the year in the minor leagues, sprinkled throughout the ranks from Class A to AAA, as well as Independent baseball.

In this year's MLB Draft, five Red Raiders were drafted by five different squads. LHP Parker Mushinski (seventh) and OF Tanner Gardner (ninth) were both selected in the top 10 rounds of the draft by the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, respectively. LHP Jacob Patterson (13th round – St. Louis Cardinals), SS Orlando Garcia (15th round – San Francisco Giants) and 1B Hunter Hargrove (25th round – Oakland Athletics) were taken on the final day.

Gardner, Hargrove & Patterson all made their pro debuts last week. Mushinski began his professional career with the Tri-City ValleyCats on June 26, while Garcia is still awaiting his placement.

CHAD BETTIS – Colorado Rockies - RHP
Bettis began the season on the 60-day disabled list after needing chemotherapy to treat cancer. On Nov. 29, Bettis underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and was deemed to be a success on Dec. 22, but in March it was determined he would need the chemotherapy to continue treatment. After finishing chemo, Bettis has rejoined the Rockies and begun workouts to return to action. Last season, Bettis led the Rockies in innings pitched with 186.0, putting together a 14-8 record.

DANIEL COULOMBE – Oakland Athletics - LHP
Coulombe has made 31 appearances this season for the A's. He's tossed 25.1 innings, allowing just seven runs, five earned, on 18 hits, while striking out 20. So far in June, he's pitched in 11 games, giving up just a run, unearned, in one outing on June 11 at Tampa Bay. He's racked up eight strikeouts this month, dropping his ERA to 1.78. The A's are 34-42 this year and are fifth in the A.L. Central.

NATHAN KARNS – Kansas City Royals - RHP
Karns has made nine appearances this season for the Royals, the first in relief and the last eight in a starting role. Over four starts in May, he posted a 2-0 record, with wins coming against the Chicago White Sox and on the road at Tampa Bay. In his last two outings, he's picked up no decisions after going 5.0 innings against both Baltimore and Minnesota, allowing just two runs and one run, respectively, in those two starts. The May 13^th game against Baltimore marked back-to-back outings with double digit strikeout figures, posting a career-high 12 against the Orioles. This season, Karns is 2-2 with 51 strikeouts and a 4.17 ERA, putting together a 2.01 ERA during the month of May. The Royals are 28-34 this year and are fourth in the A.L. Central.

A.J. RAMOS – Miami Marlins - RHP
Ramos has made 28 appearances out of the bullpen for the Marlins this year. Over 27.1 innings pitched, Ramos has given up 12 runs, 11 earned, & 20 hits, while striking out 37. He had his first blown save of the year on June 17 in Atlanta, but followed with three-straight saves in the finale against the Nationals & twice against the Cubs last week to give him 12 in 2017. This year, the Marlins are 34-40 and are third in the N.L. East.

JOSH TOMLIN – Cleveland Indians - RHP
Tomlin has made 15 starts this season for the Indians, posting a 4-9 record. On June 15, Tomlin picked up his fourth win of the year against the Dodgers, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits & ringing up seven batters. This year, he's struck out 61 batters and walked only nine over 81.1 innings pitched. This season, the Indians are 39-35 and are second in the A.L. Central by 0.5 games.

KELBY TOMLINSON – San Francisco Giants - INF
Tomlinson was recalled to the Giants active roster on April 26. Over 64 at-bats, Tomlinson's recorded 16 hits, scoring seven runs and two RBI, while putting together a .250 average at the plate. It is his third stint with the club in as many years. Before getting the call up, Tomlinson had played in 14 games this season for the Sacramento River Cats, racking up 13 hits along with four RBI and 11 runs scored. This season, the Giants are 27-51 and are fifth in the N.L. West.

BARRETT BARNES (OF) – Indianapolis Indians – International League - Class AAA – Pittsburgh Pirates
Barnes has played in 24 games this season for the Indianapolis Indians are returning from injury. Barnes has racked up 18 hits, including seven doubles, along with 10 runs scored and eight RBI for a .247 average. The 2017 season marks Barnes' first at the AAA level, who has moved up in the Pirates organization since being drafted in 2012. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on June 13.

BLAKE BASS (RHP) – Down East Wood Ducks – Carolina League - Class A Advanced – Texas Rangers
Bass has pitched in six games in 2017, picking up a win and a save for the Down East Wood Ducks. Over 11.0 innings, Bass has given up 15 hits and 10 runs, six earned, while striking out five. Last season, Bass was 6-3 with two saves in 36 appearances in Class A ball for the Hickory Crawdads. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on April 26.

DALTON BROWN (RHP) – Arizona League Brewers – Arizona League – Rookie League – Milwaukee Brewers
Brown made two appearances this season for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Over 3.2 innings, he's struck out two, while giving up six earned runs. Last season, Brown finished 1-1 with one save in 12 outings in Rookie League play with the Helena Brewers and the Arizona League Brewers. On May 5, he was assigned to the Helena Brewers. He was assigned to the Arizona League Brewers on June 22 and is listed on the 60-day disabled list.

SHANE BROYLES (RHP) – Hartford Yard Goats – Eastern League – Class AA – Colorado Rockies
Broyles has pitched in 22 games this year for the Hartford Yard Goats. He's finished 13 games, earning seven saves, while racking up 39 strikeouts over 29.0 innings. He's allowed only seven runs, six earned, on 18 hits in his second year with the club for a 1.86 ERA. During the month of June, Broyles has allowed just three hits over 7.1 innings of work, striking out 13, including a four-strikeout day on June 4. Last season, he appeared in 36 games, picking up one save and 69 strikeouts in Class AA play.

MATT CUSTRED (RHP) – Rome Braves – South Atlantic League – Class A – Atlanta Braves
Custred has made six appearances in 2017 for the Rome Braves. In 12.2 innings, he's allowed only one earned run and six hits, while ringing up 16 opposing hitters. He sits with a 0.71 ERA early into his second season in Rome at Class A ball. Last season, Custred made 40 appearances, posting a 5-3 record with two saves, striking out 64 over 56.2 innings pitched. On June 25, he made his return to the mound after a stint on the disabled list.

TY DAMRON (LHP) – Beloit Snappers – Midwest League – Class A – Oakland Athletics
Damron has made five starts and 11 total appearances for the Beloit Snappers this season. He picked up a save in his first non-start of the year on April 15. He's totaled 37.0 innings, striking out 40 batters for a 5.11 ERA and 3-4 record. On June 22, Beloit sent Damron on a rehab assignment to the Arizona League Athletics.

ZACH DAVIS (OF) – Eugene Emeralds – Northwest League – Class A Short Season – Chicago Cubs
Davis was assigned to the Eugene Emeralds on June 12, playing in nine games for the squad so far this year. In 29 at-bats, Davis has 11 hits, including two doubles and two homers, for a .379 average. He has also has six RBI and five runs scored. It is his second year in the Cubs organization, playing in the Arizona Rookie League in 2016.

JONNY DROZD (LHP) – Fort Myers Miracle – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Minnesota Twins
Drozd has pitched in 17 games for the Fort Myers Miracle in 2017. He's closed out nine games this season, earning three saves, totaling 26.2 innings and a 3.04 ERA. Drozd has struck out 19 batters while giving up just nine earned runs on 31 hits in his first year in Class A Advanced ball in the Minnesota system. He spent his first three years in the Yankees farm, spending parts of two seasons at the Class A Advanced level.

ROBERT DUGGER (RHP) – Clinton Lumberkings – Midwest League – Class A – Seattle Mariners
Dugger has made 17 appearances for the Clinton Lumberkings this season, finishing off nine games and earning two saves, while starting each of his last four outings. In 44.0 innings pitched, he has struck out 40, while allowing 12 runs on 30 hits, giving him a 2.45 ERA. He is 3-1 this season, making his longest start of the year on June 13 against Beloit, coming 6.0 frames, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four. It is his second season in the Mariners system, spending last year in different spots in Short A ball, Rookie league and Class AAA. On June 21, he pitched in the Midwest League All-Stars Game for the West division, tossing 0.2 inning & a strikeout.

TANNER GARDNER (OF) – Hickory Crawdads – South Atlantic League – Class A – Texas Rangers
Gardner made his pro debut over the weekend with the Hickory Crawdads in Class A ball. In three games, he's racked up two hits, while drawing two walks, along with a run & an RBI for a .250 average. He's made starts in both left field & right field after being drafted in the ninth round by the Texas Rangers.

ERIC GUTIERREZ (INF) – Greensboro Grasshoppers – South Atlantic League – Class A – Miami Marlins
Gutierrez began his 2017 season on April 29 and has played in 37 games this season for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Over 132 at-bats, Gutierrez has 37 hits, including eight doubles and two homers, as well as 22 runs scored and 16 RBI for a .280 average. He has a hit in each of his last six games, with multi-hit performances in three of the six games. This year marks his first full year in the Marlins system, as he moved from Rookie League to Short A ball in 2016 after completing his collegiate career.

HUNTER HARGROVE (INF) – Arizona League Athletics – Arizona League – Rookie League – Oakland A's
Hargrove made his pro debut over the weekend as well, playing in two games so far for the Arizona League Athletics. In his first game, he recorded an RBI and drew two walks, then picked up his first pro hit on June 25 in his second contest. He was drafted in the 25^th round by the Oakland Athletics.

HAYDEN HOWARD (LHP) – Hagerstown Suns – South Atlantic League – Class A – Washington Nationals
Howard has appeared in 17 games this year for the Hagerstown Suns, starting one and finishing off seven. He's off to a 4-0 start over 46.2 innings pitched, giving up 21 earned runs and striking out 48 for a 4.05 ERA in his first year in Class A ball. He has given up just two earned runs over his last six outings, included three-straight shutout performances, striking out 22 in the process. Last year, Howard spent time in Short A & Rookie League levels, pitching in 12 games over 23.1 innings.

COLT HYNES (LHP) – Tulsa Drillers – Texas League – Class AA – Los Angeles Dodgers
Hynes has pitched in 18 games for the Tulsa Drillers this season, putting up a 5-1 mark after starting in four contests. Over 48.1 innings, he has allowed 18 runs on 51 hits, striking out 37 & issuing only nine walks. Hynes returns to the Dodgers organization, spending time with Toronto, Oakland and Cleveland over the last two years, moving from AA-to-AAA-to-MLB.

DOMINIC MORENO (RHP) – West Michigan Whitecaps – Midwest League – Class A – Detroit Tigers
Moreno is in his third year in the Tigers organization. He is currently on the disabled list.

RYAN MOSELEY (RHP) – Great Lakes Loons – Midwest League – Class A – Los Angeles Dodgers
On June 22, Moseley was assigned to the Great Lakes Loons from the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He's made just one appearance for the Loons, a 4.1 inning outing on June 24, allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out three. Moseley pitched in 10 games for the Quakes, putting together a 3.26 ERA over 30.1 innings pitched. He's struck out 20 while allowing 11 earned runs. After wrapping up his college career in 2016, Moseley spent 12 games with the Aberdeen IronBirds in Short-Season A ball in the Orioles organization.

PARKER MUSHINSKI (LHP) – Tri-City ValleyCats – New York-Penn League – Class A Short Season – Houston Astros
Mushinski made his debut for the Tri-City ValleyCats on June 26, pitching an inning against Vermont. He recorded two of his outs via strikeout, while walking two. Mushinski was Tech's highest draft pick in this 2017 MLB Draft, selected by the Houston Astros in the seventh round.

TYLER NESLONY (OF) – Florida Fire Frogs – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Atlanta Braves
Neslony has played in 50 games this season for the Florida Fire Frogs. In 178 at-bats, he has 56 hits, including 16 doubles and three homers, with 20 RBI and 25 runs scored. He has a .315/.384/.455 line to start out his second season in the minors. Last year, he played in 46 games in Class A & Rookie League play, hitting a combined .280 with 46 hits.

JACOB PATTERSON (LHP) – Johnson City Cardinals – Appalachian League – Rookie League – St. Louis Cardinals
Patterson has already pitched twice this season for the Johnson City Cardinals, making his pro debut on June 22. He's tossed 1.1 frames in each outing this year, while striking out two in both & giving up just one hit in his second trip to the mound. Patterson was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13^th round of the this year's draft.

DUSTIN RICHARDSON (LHP) – Sugar Land Skeeters – Atlantic League – Independent League
Richardson has pitched in 29 games for the Sugar Land Skeeters this season, finishing off five games to earn four saves. In 21.0 innings pitched, he's struck out 32 & given up just 14 hits and 13 runs, 12 earned, for a 5.14 ERA. It is his second stint in the Independent League, playing for Long Island last season. He's been a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers & Angels organizations along with the Marlins & Braves, as well as playing in the majors for the Red Sox.

STEPHEN SMITH (OF) – Hillsboro Hops – Northwest League – Class A Short Season – Arizona Diamondbacks
Smith has played in eight games this season for the Hillsboro Hops. He has six hits, five runs and an RBI, while drawing six walks. It is his second season with the Hops in the Diamondbacks organization.

COREY TAYLOR (RHP) – Binghamton Rumble Ponies – Eastern League – Class AA – New York Mets
Taylor his pitched in 24 games this year for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Over 32.2 innings, Taylor has struck out 24 batters and allowed 14 runs, while finishing off 11 contests for three saves, for a 3.86 ERA. It is the third year Taylor has been in the Mets system since 2015 and earned an invite to the program's spring training camp.

DUKE VON SCHAMANN (RHP) – Joliet Slammers – Frontier League – Independent League
Schamann has made seven starts for the Joliet Slammers this season, putting up a 2-4 record. Over 42.1 innings pitched, he's recorded 20 strikeouts, while allowing 22 earned runs for a 4.68 ERA. Schamann has spent time in the Indians and Dodgers organization from 2012-15, while spending the last two seasons playing in the Independent league.

ANDRE WHEELER (LHP) – Winston-Salem Dash – Carolina League – Class A Advanced – Chicago White Sox
Wheeler has pitched in 13 games this year with the Winston-Salem Dash. In his third stint in Class A Advanced ball, Wheeler has struck out 24 over 21.1 innings, allowing 16 runs. Last season, he spent time with the Dash & moved up to AA ball in Birmingham, where he pitched in 19 games. On May 29, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to May 27.

MATT WITHROW (RHP) – Mississippi Braves – Southern League – Class AA – Atlanta Braves
Withrow has made 10 starts this season for the Mississippi Braves, posting a 1-3 overall record. In 48.1 innings pitched, he's struck out 44 and put together a 4.47 ERA. It is his third year in the Braves organization, moving from Danville in 2015 to Carolina last year. On June 7, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list.
