Men's Tennis Picks Up Quality Wins During Fall Season on Friday
September 24, 2016 | Men's Tennis
LAFAYETTE, La./Athens, Ga. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team continued the strong start to its fall season Friday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus and the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.
In Louisiana, Bjorn Thomson tucked away a 4-6 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory over Colin Markes of the University of Texas to secure his spot in the semifinal round.
Thomson teamed with Alex Sendegeya for a pair of doubles wins. The duo defeated LSU's Justin Saborio and Rafael Wagner by a 6-3, 7-6, margin followed by a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Eric Perez and Coleman Wahlberg of Louisiana-Lafayette to advance to the semifinal round.
"We had a good day in Louisiana" Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Bjorn advanced to the semifinals of the main draw in singles and doubles. We have to continue to compete well, brush up on a few things and get them ironed out. This is what the fall season is all about. It's for our guys to get opportunities to work on things and to continue to improve."
Jolan Cailleau and Ronit Bisht picked up wins over ranked opponents during the opening round of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Cailleau turned the tables and dialed up a tightly-contested
4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 42 Luis Valero of Tennessee whereas Bisht bounced back for a 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Florida's Chase Perez-Blanco who entered the fall campaign ranked No. 76 in the nation.
Jackson Cobb added two singles wins in the Division II section of the draw. He dismissed East Tennessee State's David Gonzalez by a 6-3, 6-1 margin and upended Jason Kros of Virginia Tech with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback decision.
"It was a mixed day today, but solid in the fact that everyone picked up some wins highlighted by ranked wins for Jolan and Ronit," Texas Tech assistant coach Jordan Szabo said. "We need to get better at closing our games, and these experiences will help us come the spring season."
The Red Raiders continue action Saturday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic and the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.
