LAKE NONA, Fla. – The No. 23 Texas Tech men's tennis team picked up a split on opening day as the Red Raiders downed New Mexico 4-0 before falling 4-3 to host UCF on Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Leading the way for Texas Tech (1-1) was Alex Sendegeya, who went 2-0 in singles from the No. 3 position and clinched the victory against the Lobos.
While the Red Raiders breezed through the opening match, the night contest against UCF proved to be a much tougher test. 3
The doubles point took all three matches to determine the winner, and the Knights claimed four first sets in singles. With the match even at 3-3, it was a battle in the No. 2 slot between Connor Curry and Kalman Boyd that went in favor of Boyd which gave UCF the win.
In doubles versus UCF, the Knights' No. 27 ranked pair of Mariano Porter and Harrison Richmond earned the first decision and knocked off No. 60 Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson, 6-2, in the top spot.
Texas Tech bounced back in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to capture the double point. Curry teamed with Carlos DiLaura for a 6-3 victory versus Korey Lovett and Boyd at No. 2. The Red Raiders No. 3 team of Ronit Bisht and Pyry Hyrkkonen upended Enrique Paya and Chris Barrus by a 6-4 margin.
Texas Tech dug itself a hole in singles action as the Knights secured four of the first six sets. The Red Raiders went ahead 2-0 when Thomson claimed a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Porter on court four.
UCF answered with straight-set victories courtesy of Barrus and Danny Kerznerman at the bottom the lineup to knot the score at 2-2. Barrus dismissed No. 120 Bisht 6-0, 6-4 followed by Kerznerman's 7-6 (3), 6-1 triumph over DiLaura.
Texas Tech regained a 3-2 lead with Sendegeya's 6-3, 6-2 win over Richmond at the No. 3 slot. However, the advantage didn't last long as Lovett notched a 7-6 (8), 6-4 upset of No. 25 Cailleau at the top spot to tie the tally at 3-3.
The attention turned to court two where Boyd defeated No. 104 Curry in a closely contested 7-6 (0), 6-4 decision for the UCF victory.
Texas Tech made quick work of New Mexico to start the day. The Red Raiders dropped a combined three games at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles position to jump out to the early 1-0 edge.
Sendegeya and Thomson secured a 6-1 win over Bart Van Leijsen and Dominic West. The Red Raiders clinched the doubles point courtesy of Bisht and Hyrkkonen. The freshmen pair dialed up a 6-2 victory versus Sean Baklini and Jorge Escutia.
Texas Tech came away with the sweep as the top three spots in the lineup collected straight set wins. Curry amassed a 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Ricky Hernandez-Tong on court two, while Cailleau minted his debut at the No. 1 singles line with a 7-6 (9), 6-1 win over Van Leijsen to make it 3-0.
Sendegeya tallied a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rodolfo Jauregui in the No. 3 spot to put the finishes touches on the 4-0 victory.
