Men's Tennis Dumps Wichita State in Home Opener
January 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Ronit Bisht picked up his first career dual match victory.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated Wichita State by a 5-2 margin during their 2017 home opener Saturday at the Lubbock Country Club.
The win increases the Red Raiders record to 2-1 after a tough split on the road in Florida last weekend which provided Texas Tech a chance to prove themselves in a home debut.
"We talked about the emphasis in practice this week being with our guys making some adjustments with their games personally and playing a little more aggressive," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Wichita State is a good team. It was a little scary to play them anyone especially on these fast courts indoors. I feel like our guys played well in doubles especially at two and three. We came out in singles and took leads pretty early. What I was really impressed with was that the guys who started the right way in singles, they were able to keep it up."
Texas Tech started strong in doubles action against a highly competitive Wichita State squad and quickly collected a pair of wins from the bottom of the lineup.
Connor Curry and Carlos DiLaura dropped the first game but shook the nerves en route to a six-game streak to defeat WSU's Murkel Dellien and Jocelyn Devilliers, 6-1.
The freshmen duo of Ronit Bisht and Pyry Hykkonen breezed through their opponents and also secured 6-2 win over WSU's Eddie Stoica and Marius Frosa to end doubles play with the Red Raiders leading 1-0.
No. 60 Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson were in the middle of a back-and-fourth match against WSU's Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue when play stopped. The score was tied at 4-4.
Singles play provided another challenge for the Red Raiders, who ultimately triumphed over the Shockers by winning four of the six matches.
No. 104 Curry swept past Frosa on court three and only dropped one game along the way to a dominant 6-0, 6-1 decision to push Texas Tech's advantage to 2-0.
The Shockers responded behind Herzan in the No. 2 spot. He picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Sendegeya to trim the Texas Tech lead to 2-1.
The Red Raiders didn't back down and continued to shine to take the next three matchups to clinch the win. Thomson was next to finish for Texas Tech and dismissed Devilliers in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to extend the lead to 3-1.
No. 25 Jolan Cailleau defeated Haru Inoue at the No.1 spot. The two players split the first two sets as Cailleau notched a 6-1 victory after he fell 6-4 in the opener and proved to outlast Haru after he took a tightly-contested third set by a 6-4 margin to ensure a Red Raider victory with the fourth point.
Bisht notched his first singles win in dual match competition for Texas Tech against Eddie Stoica and dialed up a 6-1, 6-3 win.
"I was proud for a guy like Ronit to get his first win in singles," Masi said. "That always weighs on your mind. You want to show your worth as a player on the team. For Connor, he came out and played the right way. He played under control, imposed himself and didn't try to do too much. It's going to take some time for some of these guys to adjust to their new lineup position and how to play in them. In Jolan's case, he's playing the best player on the other team. You have to bring it and be ready for your opponent's best. I think he did a great job tonight. He won the match and didn't hope that the other guy gave it to him."
Wichita State's Dellien outlasted Hyrkkonen in the No. 6 slot. It was a competitive 7-6 (6) opening set where the two players traded the lead four times. Hyrkkonen possessed a 5-2 edge in the tiebreaker but allowed six of the closing seven points. The two players battled in set two, but it was Dellien who came out on top, 6-4.
"I told the guys after the match that the competition level keeps rising and the stakes get higher. We have to continue to get ready to live up to those moments. We have three matches under our belt, and I thought it was a big deal for us to have a match before playing next weekend in the ITA Kickoff. The guys need to continue to have a good work ethic and continue to improve. They enjoyed making the ITA National Indoors last year, and they want to do it again."
Texas Tech is one of 16 host sites for the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 28-29 at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders take on Iowa next Saturday with first serve set for 12 p.m. CT. Admission is free to all home matches.
