January 28, 2017 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team fell to Iowa by a 4-3 decision Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The loss gives Texas Tech a 2-2 overall record and a 1-1 home record for the season after the Red Raiders won their home opener against Wichita State last Saturday.
"It was a team loss today," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Give credit to Iowa, they came into our house and beat us. Tomorrow, we'll need to be a lot tougher."
Doubles play set the tone for the Hawkeyes (3-0) which grabbed the opening point.
On court three, Ronit Bisht and Pyry Hyrkkonen started behind. However, they pushed the Iowa duo of Robin Haden and Jake Jacoby after tying the score at 3-3 but it was Haden and Jacoby who took the match at 6-3 behind a three-game run to close it.
The No. 60 duo of Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson dropped the first three games to Iowa's Josh Silverstein and Lefteris Theodorou at No. 1 position. They evened the score at 3-3 after a three-game streak of their own before falling 6-4.
Texas Tech's Carlos DiLaura and Connor Curry were on their way back from a 3-1 deficit but play was stopped with the duo trailing 4-3. Curry suffered an injury in doubles but was able to return in singles action.
"Connor went down with an injury, but he bounced back," Masi said. "He dislocated his toe, and they were able to get it back into place. Then, he battled there in singles. I commended him in the locker room for fighting through that."
Texas Tech and Iowa split the opening sets during the six singles matches in the tightly-contested affair.
Bisht was the first Red Raider to cross the finish line at the No. 5 slot on the strength of eight consecutive games. He went onto defeat Larsen 6-0, 7-5. Bisht has won both of his home matches in dual match play.
Shortly after, Bjorn Thomson gave the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead after he dominated Haden with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court four.
Allaf provided an answer for the Hawkeyes as he knocked Curry 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot. That win drew the match even at 2-2.
Sendegeya split sets with Iowa's Theodorou on court two. It was Theodorou who finished strong to claim a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 decision which gave the Hawkeyes a 3-2 edge.
DiLaura swung the momentum back in Texas Tech's favor as he outlasted Jacoby at the bottom of the lineup. He took the first season after a four-game run helped him secure a 6-2 win. Jacoby notched a 6-2 victory in set two. The deciding set was back-and-forth with DiLaura grinding out a hard-fought 7-5 triumph to even the tally at 3-3.
The game winning point came down to No. 25 Jolan Cailleau against Silverstein on court one. Cailleau responded from a 6-4 loss in the opening set with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Set three went the distance to a winner-take-all tiebreaker. After splitting the first six points, Silverstein rattled off the final four points to tuck away the 4-3 decision in favor of Iowa.
Texas Tech will take on Florida State Sunday with first serve set for 12 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center to close out the ITA Kick-Off weekend. Admission is free to all home matches.
