Sendegeya and Thomson Roll into Quarterfinals at John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic
September 22, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders won six of their eight singles matches on day one of the John Breaux Tennis Classic.
LAFAYETTE, La. – Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson of the Texas Tech men's tennis team collected a pair of singles wins to secure their spots in the quarterfinals Thursday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus.
Sendegeya came away with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Coleman Wahlborg of Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round. He posted an efficient 6-4, 6-2 win against Southern Cal's Laurens Verboven during his Round of 16 match.
Thomson dialed up two victories over SEC opponents. He dismissed Ole Miss' Grey Hamilton by a 6-1,
6-4 score line during the opening round. Thomson fought back for a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory versus the event's No. 2 seed and No. 35 Jordan Diagle to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals.
Connor Curry and Carlos DiLaura bounced back with consolation victories in straight sets over opponents from Louisiana-Lafayette after the pair fell in the opening round. Curry emerged with 6-2, 6-3 decision over Vlad Kramarov, while DiLaura knocked off Eric Perez by a 7-6, 6-3 margin.
"It was a really great day for our guys," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Alex and Bjorn were terrific. I'm very happy with how Alex played in his second match. He had great control of his ball and was really solid. Bjorn had the highlight of the day beating the event's No. 2 seed and a Top 35 player from LSU. I thought he competed hard and hung in there when it got tough. His opponent gave him an opening, and he took it. I'm pleased with how Connor and Carlos responded and battled back to win their consolation matches after tough three-set losses in the first round. Conditions are really hot and humid so fitness will play a big role the rest of the way."
The Red Raiders return to action Friday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic and begin play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.
