December 19, 2016 | Baseball
Sophomore pitcher Davis Martin is the third Red Raider pitcher to receive the distinction
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball sophomore pitcher Davis Martin has been named to the 2017 Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America Third Team, the publication announced today.
Â
It is the first preseason All-America honor for the San Angelo native and the first for the Red Raiders since Eric Gutierrez in 2015. The distinction makes Martin the first Texas Tech sophomore, third pitcher and 11th overall to be named a preseason All-American since 1999.
Â
Martin put together a strong freshman season in 2016, recording a 10-1 overall record with two saves, beginning the year in the bullpen before moving into the starter role. In 89.1 innings pitched, he compiled a 2.52 earned-run average while striking out 61 batters over 19 appearances and 14 starts. His 10 wins were tied for not only the Big 12 lead, but also the most among freshman in the country.
Â
His 10th victory was one of the biggest in Texas Tech history, coming against No. 1 Florida in the College World Series on June 22. Martin tossed seven shutout innings in his outing in Omaha, allowing only three hits and ringing up three batters en route to Tech's 3-2 victory.
Â
Martin's 10 wins in 2016 were the most ever by a Red Raider freshman, which included a spotless 6-0 record in Big 12 action. He earned four Freshman All-America awards for his performance last year, making him one of 14 players in school history to do so.
Â
The Red Raiders open the 2017 slate on the road with a pair of two-game series against Mississippi State and Western Illinois beginning Feb. 17 in Starkville, Mississippi.
