November 06, 2016 | Baseball
Junior outfielder Connor Beck posts two hit, two RBI performance in Sunday’s contest.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Red & Black series pulled even after a 5-0 win from the Black squad in a seven-inning game two on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Junior outfielder Connor Beck and freshman infielder Brian Klein each recorded two RBI for Black, which included a two-run home run by Beck in the top of the seventh. Senior infielder Hunter Hargrove drove in the other run for the Black squad.
Â
Sunday's contest began as a pitcher's duel between sophomore Davis Martin (Black) and freshman John Henry Gonzalez (Red), who kept the game scoreless through the first four innings. Martin tossed 3.2 innings, striking out one and allowing only two hits, while Gonzalez threw 4.0 frames of one-hit ball, while ringing up three batters.
Â
In the fourth inning, Martin found himself with two on and two out after an error and a single by junior infielder Zach Rheams. From there, the Black squad handed the ball over to junior Jacob Patterson, who induced a ground ball to get out of the inning.
Â
The Black team broke through in the top of the fifth with three runs. Beck's two-hit day started in the frame after a single to left field to load the bases. Another single by Klein brought in the first two runs, then Beck crossed the plate after Hargrove found his way on base during the next at-bat.
Â
Two innings later, Beck would work a 2-2 count and turn it into a two-run homer over the left-centerfield fence, extending Black's lead to 5-0.
Â
Patterson would close out the day the Black team, pitching 3.1 innings and finishing off the day with three strikeouts, allowing only one hit to earn the win.
Â
Game three of the five-game set is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
