Junior Connor Beck drives in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday afternoon.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Red & Black series came to a close on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park after the Black squad posted a walk-off victory, 5-4, over the Red team.
Â
Junior Connor Beck roped the game-winning single to left field to drive in junior Orlando Garcia in the bottom of the ninth for the win. It was part of a three-hit day for Beck, the third time in the series he's recorded a multi-hit performance. Freshman Brian Klein also racked up three hits for the Black squad, while senior Ryan Long added two, giving Black a total of 11 hits on the day.
Â
The Red team also had three players with two hits in sophomores Cody Farhat & Tyler Fowler and freshman Michael Berglund. Red forced a bottom half of the ninth after coming from down 4-2 in the top of the frame by plating Fowler and freshman Grant Little.
Â
Freshmen Jake McDonald (Black) and John Henry Gonzalez (Red) got the start on the mound in Sunday's game. McDonald would go four innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out one. Gonzalez rung up four batters for the Red team, joining junior Jacob Patterson and freshman Connor Heffron, who earned the win, as the three pitchers to strike out four hitters in game five.
Â
Black got out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind a fielder's choice from senior Hunter Hargrove, setting up Garcia to score. Hargrove would also cross the plate later in the inning after an error.
Â
In the top of the second, Red would respond with a run of their own thanks to a double from junior Zach Rheams that scored Berglund, who singled in the at-bat prior, from first to cut the Black lead in half.
Â
The next three frames would remain scoreless until Black added two more runs in the sixth. The first brought in freshman Trevor Paradoski behind a double from Klein. Sophomore Matt Bernstein drove in the second run with a single up the middle, plating Klein from second to make it 4-1.
Â
A double from Farhat in the top of the eighth put runners on second and third with no outs for the Red squad. Senior Anthony Lyons would score from third after a passed ball on a strikeout. Singles by Lyons and Farhat in the ninth tied the game at four.
Â
Garcia led off in the bottom of the ninth with a walk and would be driven in two batters later by Beck for the winner.

The Red & Black series wraps up the fall team practice schedule for the Red Raiders. Tech will return to organized team activity in January in preparation for the start of the 2017 season.
