Tomlin, Indians Set To Begin World Series
October 25, 2016 | Baseball
Red Raider Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians will face the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 Fall Classic
CLEVELAND – Former Texas Tech baseball pitching standout Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians open the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. CST on FOX from Progressive Field.
Â
Tomlin will be the first Red Raider to play in the Fall Classic. His career-year helped put the Indians in the World Series for the first time since 1997 and the sixth berth overall in franchise history. The Indians have won the World Series two times, the first in 1920 against the Brooklyn Robins and in 1948 over the Boston Braves.
Â
Tomlin will be tasked with the game three start, unless Trevor Bauer is unable to pitch due to the injury to his right pinkie finger. That contest will be the first World Series game held in Wrigley Field since 1945. Game three is also set for a 7 p.m. start time on FOX.
Â
"That's going to be something else," Tomlin said. "I've never actually pitched in Wrigley Field, but we played there last year, so I've gotten to experience a game there. But, I take it this will be a little bit different atmosphere than it was that day."
Â
Over the course of two postseason starts, Tomlin has accumulated a 2.53 ERA in 10.2 innings, pitching in both the ALDS & ALCS. He rung up 10 batters, keeping opponent's batting average to .184 en route to back-to-back postseason victories.
Â
The Tyler, Texas, native led the MLB in walks per nine innings pitched with a mark of 1.035 this season. His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.9 was second in the league in 2016.
Â
Tomlin spent one year in Lubbock before being drafted by the Indians in the 19th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Tomlin is the longest-tenured player on the Indians roster, helping the club to their first AL Central division title since 2007. That year was also the last time the Tribe appeared in the ALCS.
