PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. --Texas Tech men's golf started the 2015-16 campaign by earning a fifth-place finish at the Carmel Cup, at the Pebble Beach Golf Links, on Sunday.
Tech (377-352-370--1099) shot 19-over as a team, finishing above Arkansas, Ohio State and TCU, all of which received votes in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll. Each team participating in the tournament was either ranked or receiving votes in the poll.
A year after finishing third as an individual in this tournament, Tech junior Hannes Ronneblad returned to the top of the leaderboard, posting a score of 2-under (74-69-71--214) for the weekend, which tied for first overall. However, he fell by one stroke on the first playoff hole to Georgia's Greyson Sigg.
Ronneblad was one of eight players to post multiple rounds under 72, which is par for the prestigious 6,828-yard course. Ronneblad also finished tied for the second most birdies over the weekend, with 14.
Right on Ronneblad's heels was Red Raider Freshman Ivan Ramirez, who finished his Tech debut at even par (72-70-74--216), good enough to tie for seventh as an individual.
Sophomore Hurly Long (74-71-75--220, 23rd place), freshman Hayden Springer (78-70-75--223, 31st place) and sophomore Wes Artac (79-74-75--228, 40th place) all carded top-40 finishes to round out the team scores for the Red Raiders.
Senior Henry Todd (81-72-76--229) finished 13-over as an individual player.
Tech was tied for seventh after day one's score of 377, but shot the second-lowest team score of the weekend, a 352, to get back in contention on Saturday.
The Red Raiders will be back in action Sept. 18 when they begin play at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
