LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior first baseman Eric Gutierrez picked up his second postseason honor on Wednesday as he was named to the All-Midwest Region second team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
This is the second-straight year where Gutierrez has been recognized on the ABCA All-Region squads as he was also a second team selection following his 2014 sophomore season.
Gutierrez is the first Texas Tech first baseman to be named to one of the two all-region teams in back-to-back seasons since former Red Raider great Gary Ashby did so following the 1976-77 seasons. Texas Tech had not previously had any player garner all-region honors in consecutive seasons since Roger Kieschnick (2007-08).
Gutierrez put together another solid season at the plate, hitting .315 overall with four home runs and 46 RBI from his usual spot in the middle of the lineup. He also connected on 14 doubles and drew 39 walks for a career-high .444 on-base percentage.
The Mission, Texas native ranks second in the Big 12 for RBI and on-base percentage and is fourth overall for walks heading into the College World Series. He is also among the league leaders with 10 multiple-RBI games this season.
Gutierrez will enter his 2016 senior season among the national leaders in consecutive starts as he had been in the starting lineup in all 177 games of his Texas Tech career. That figure currently ranks fourth among juniors nationally.
Gutierrez was previously named to the All-Big 12 first team for the second-straight season, making him the first Red Raider to do so since Barrett Barnes in 2012.
