AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Dominic Moreno pitched six scoreless innings leading No. 21 Texas Tech to a series win at Texas with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,284 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Red Raiders (29-20, 12-9 Big 12) have won back-to-back Big 12 series in Austin for the first time since 1999, 2001. The game-three victory marked head coach Tim Tadlock's 100th career win as head coach of the Red Raiders. Tadlock reached the career milestone in only 171 games, faster than any coach in school history.
Tech scored a run in the third and added three runs in the fifth, which included a two-run homer from senior second baseman Bryant Burleson, and added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Moreno, who now has 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, didn't allow a base runner to third base until the fifth inning while striking out at least one Longhorn in all six innings pitched. He allowed six base hits and walked two batters while improving to 3-3 on the season. In addition, Moreno has pitched 13.0 consecutive scoreless innings at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, dating back to his Big 12 career debut in 2013.
Texas starting pitcher Connor Mayes (1-4) took the loss allowing all five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Junior outfielder Tyler Neslony scored Tech's first run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Junior first baseman Eric Gutierrez recorded his 13th two-out RBI of the season to give Tech a 2-0 lead and then Burleson's homer - his third of the season - gave Tech a 4-0 lead.
Junior designated hitter Cory Raley singled to right field in the sixth inning to give Tech 5-0 lead.
Texas scored its only run of the game in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
Three Tech relievers entered the game following Moreno, as left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek went 1.1 innings, right-handed pitcher Matt Custred pitched 0.2 scoreless innings and junior right-handed pitcher Matt Withrow pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Junior Cory Raley extended his hit streak to 11 games going 2-for-5, junior centerfielder Zach Davis went 2-for-5, Burleson went 2-for-5 and Gutierrez posted his team-leading 17th multi-hit game going 2-for-4.
The Red Raiders will take the following week off for final exams and will play their final Big 12 Conference series of the season at West Virginia, May 14-16, at newly built Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, W. Va.
