The win allows Tech (24-26; 8-9) to potentially claim its fourth-straight Big 12 series on Sunday afternoon when the two teams close the weekend in a 12 p.m. first pitch. The Red Raiders have not won four-consecutive conference series in school history.
Tech scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning, taking advantage of an Iowa State (26-24; 3-11) throwing error that allowed Kristi Belshe to race home from second base off a Lea Hopson bunt single.
It was Tech's first extra-inning victory since scoring a 9-7 win on April 18 last year at Kansas. The Red Raiders were previously 0-3 in extra-inning contests this year.
Both of Tech's runs came as a result of Jorden Spendlove throwing errors from third base. She previously threw wild in the second inning off a Susan Welborn infield single that scored Hopson.
Hopson led the Red Raiders at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 overall for her 10th multiple-hit game of the season and the 17th of her career. She recorded half of Tech's six hits with singles in the second, fourth and eighth innings.
Both pitching staffs failed to surrender a RBI as Iowa State scored its lone run off a wild pitch from Custer in the third inning. The run was charged to Tech starter Chandler Moore, who earned a no-decision after surrendering a pair of hits and a walk in 2.1 innings.
Custer (14-16), who combined for 12.2 innings over the doubleheader, battled back from several jams to pick up the win as Iowa State struggled with runners in scoring position. The Cyclones hit only 3-for-16 with runners on base en route to stranding 11 overall.
Tech did not fare much better with runners on base, hitting only 2-for-18 before stranding eight, including a pair of runners in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Stacy Roggentien (12-7), who earned the win in the series opener earlier in the day, took the loss after allowing an unearned run off two hits and three strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Iowa State starter Brianna Weilbacher gave up an unearned run off four hits, three walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
The three-run game marked the lowest-scoring contest between the two schools since Iowa State claimed a 3-0 shutout victory on April 14, 2007.
