AUBURN, Ala. - If Todd Petty was looking for a measuring stick for his team, he may have found it on Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
No. 25 Texas Tech lost in the finals of the 67th Annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Sunday, as No. 8 Alabama, outlasted the Lady Raiders, 4-1, after the match was moved indoors on the campus of Auburn University.
The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for Texas Tech (8-3), who has played 10 of their first 11 matches against ITA Top 75 programs. Alabama, who advanced to the Elite Eight last season, improved to 8-1 on the season after winning its second straight Blue Gray title.
The day started with Alabama's 2014 national champion tandem of Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe upending Texas Tech's Kenna Kilgo and Gabriela Talaba, 6-2, at No. 1. The Lady Raiders answered at No. 3, as freshmen Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson upset Luicelena Perez and Aryn Greene, 6-2. It as the Alabama tandem's first loss of the season.
The Tide secured the point at No. 2, as Danielle Spielmann and Emily Zabor defeated Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici, 6-2.
No. 50. Jansen, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player, gave Alabama its second point, as she won over No. 63 Lynn Kiro, 6-1, 6-2.
Talaba answered for the Lady Raiders, as she won her sixth straight match, 6-1, 6-2 over Zabor at No. 3.
Natalia Maynetto gave Alabama a 3-1 lead when she topped Tech's Samantha Czarniak Rego, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6.
Spielman secured the win for Alabama, as the No. 73 Tide player upset No. 56 Dvorak, 6-1, 7-6.
When the match ended, Kilgo had extended her match to a third set against No. 33 Routliffe at No. 1 and Federici was beginning the third against Perez at No. 5.
The Lady Raiders return to action March 6 at the McLeod Tennis Center, as Texas Tech hosts Wichita State and Louisiana Tech in a doubleheader.
