LUBBOCK, Texas - After a sluggish start, No. 19 Texas Tech rallied to roll past No. 22 Wichita State, 4-0, on Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
It was the second Top 25 win of the season, after Texas Tech topped then No. 22 Ohio State at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
"We are getting better. I feel like the last four days have been our best four days of practice this season," said Lay Raider head coach Todd Petty. "Wichita State is a great team. I do not feel like we played some of our best tennis in the first sets, but a lot of that had to do with Wichita State. I was proud of the way we were able to finish off some first sets and the match."
The day started with Wichita State taking the early lead on two of three doubles courts. But the Lady Raiders rallied and Katelyn Jackson and Sarah Dvorak toppled Lucia Kovalova and Rebecca Pedrazzi, 6-2 at No. 3. Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici battled back from 4-1 down to win 7-5 at No. 2 and secure the first point of the match for Texas Tech.
Gabriela Talaba then won her seventh straight match at No. 4, as the freshman upended Abby Stevens, 6-2, 6-2. Texas Tech suddenly led 2-0.
No. 50 Kiro was close behind, as the sophomore won her 15th match of the season and the 44th of her career, as she cruised past Pedrazzi, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3.
Kenna Kilgo then clinched the 4-0 win, as the senior pushed past Schiller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. It was the second time this season that Kilgo picked up the match clinching win against a Top 25 team. She also did it against Ohio State two weeks ago.
The Lady Raiders will return to action this evening, as Texas Tech faces Louisiana Tech at 5 p.m.
