Red Raider Volleyball Edged by TCU

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball fell to TCU, 3-0, on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Horned Frogs won in straight sets: 30-28, 25-23 and 25-16.
Junior Marguerite Grubb picked up her sixth double-double of the season and ninth of her career behind 35 assists and 10 digs.
Grubb was one of three Red Raiders with double-digit digs, as senior Carlie Foust led the way with 20. Sophomore Ashley Morgan racked up a season-high 14 digs against the Horned Frogs. It was the 15th time this season the Red Raiders have posted more digs than their opponent, totaling 65 on Saturday.
Tech also had three notch seven kills: senior Meghan Stacy, junior Lauren Douglass and sophomore Alyssa Ybanez. Sophomore Audrey Fragniere and senior Jenna Allen were close behind with six and five kills, respectively.
The Red Raiders got off to a hot start in the first set, opening with an 8-3 lead. Kills by Stacy and Douglass, combined with a few timely errors by the Horned Frogs extended Tech's lead to 12-4 and extinguished TCU's timeouts in the first frame. Tech maintained a 17-10 lead until a surge by the Horned Frog offense tied it at 20.
It was a back-and-forth battle from there in set one, needing overtime to settle. The Red Raiders fought off set point and looked to close out the match twice with two of their own, but the Horned Frogs battled back and ultimately claimed the first set, 30-28. The frame was tied 11 times and featured six lead changes. Tech had 20 kills, but committed 11 errors. Stacy quickly picked up where she left off last match with six kills, while also putting up six digs. Grubb racked up 15 of Tech's 19 assists in the first set.
The second frame stayed even until a 4-0 run by the Horned Frogs gave them an 11-7 advantage. TCU would push their lead to 14-10, before Tech rallied to tie it up at 16 after kills from Ybanez, Jenna Allen and Katy Keenan. TCU would push ahead with a 3-0 run of their own, but Tech answered again tie knot the set at 21. However, the Horned Frogs were able to re-take the lead and close out the second set, 25-23.
Ybanez was a perfect four-for-four on the attack in the middle frame. On the defensive side of the ball, Ashley Morgan recorded eight digs, with Foust closely behind at seven. Grubb assisted on all 10 of Tech's kills in the second set, to give her a halftime total of 25.
A pair of runs by the Horned Frogs in the third set helped seal the match for TCU. Tech tallied 11 kills, with Douglass and Allen each earning three. Ten more assists for Grubb gave her 10 or more in each set on Saturday, while Foust put up eight digs in the final frame.
The Red Raiders hit the road next week, squaring off with West Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Morgantown at 5 p.m. CT.
