LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech senior Kelsi Baker scored 17 points and freshman Dayo Olabode added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Raiders to a 52-37 win over TCU in the Big 12 Conference opener on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena.
Tech (11-2, 1-0 Big 12) won its first Big 12 game since Feb. 27, 2013, ending a 20-game slide in conference play. It also was the 100th career win and first Big 12 win for head coach Candi Whitaker.
The Lady Raiders shot out of the gate in the first half with a 13-2 lead on TCU (8-4, 0-1) thanks in part to Olabode and her relentlessness on the boards. The freshman standout had 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half, including four offensive boards. Eight of her 10 points were on putbacks as the Lady Raiders led 16-6 in second-chance points and 32-16 in the paint on Sunday.
Olabode finished with her third double-double this season and leads all Big 12 freshmen in that category. She's also second among Big 12 freshmen in points per game (9.6) and first in rebounds per game (6.3) and defensive rebounds per game (4.0).
The Horned Frogs never took a lead and never got to within six points of the Lady Raiders after the break. Tech held TCU leading scorer Zahna Medley to just three points on 1 of 11 shooting overall and forced 20 turnovers, including 10 steals that resulted in 18 points.
Tech now heads to Stillwater for its first true road game of the season when it takes on No. 18 Oklahoma State (10-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
