ATLANTA, Ga. - No. 29 Texas Tech opened the 2015 dual match season with conference foe No. 19 Oklahoma State in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
In recent years, the battle between the Lady Raiders and Cowgirls has been closely contested. Saturday was no different, as No. 19 Oklahoma State eked out a 4-2 win over No. 29 Texas Tech.
The biggest point of the day may have come in doubles, as the nation's No. 5 tandem of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente topped Kenna Kilgo and Sarah Dvorak, 6-2 at No. 1. Gabriela Talaba and Hortense Boscher shifted momentum back to Texas Tech as the two tumbled Carla Tur Mari and Karyn Guttorsmsen, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 3.
That left the first point of the day to be decided at No. 2 doubles. A back and forth affair, Texas Tech's Sabrina Federici and Lynn Kiro battled with OSU's Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic pulled even at 6-6 to send it to a tiebreaker. Another battle ensued until Adamovic and Babic just slipped past Federici and Kiro to secure a 7-6 (8-6) win.
Maria Alvarez defeated Katelyn Jackson at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3, and OSU suddenly led 2-0. But Texas Tech's No. 89 Dvorak answered a 6-1, 6-4 win over OSU's No. 53 Adamovic at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4.
Federici then tied the match, 2-2, when the British freshman picked up a straight-set victory over Guttorsmsen, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5). OSU regained the lead thanks to Laurente's 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 35 Kiro, at No. 2.
The Cowgirls' No. 10 Lushkova picked up the fourth and deciding point at No. 1, where Texas Tech's Kilgo lost a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 match.
Lady Raider Talaba saw her match with Babic abandoned in the third set.
Texas Tech will regroup and face No. 38 Columbia at 9 a.m. at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
