ATLANTA, Ga. - Last spring, Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty secured the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history at No. 14 in the nation. The dividends are starting to pay off, as all five freshmen have become key contributors in the Lady Raider lineup.
No. 29 Texas Tech (1-1) dispatched No. 38 Columbia (2-0) in 90 minutes, 4-1, on Sunday in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Hortense Boscher, Sarah Dvorak, Sabrina Federici, Katelyn Jackson and Gabriela Talaba each helped secure a point on Sunday.
Talaba and Boscher started the day with a quick 6-1 win over Adi Milstein and Vivian Cheng at No. 3 doubles. Columbia answered with a 6-1 win at No. 2, as Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev toppled Federici and Lynn Kiro.
Kenna Kilgo and Dvorak picked up a huge upset to secure the point for the Lady Raiders, as the Tech tandem ousted No. 42 Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung, 6-3, at No. 1.
Columbia quickly tied the match, as Asatrian defeated No. 35 Kiro, 6-1, 6-2. Dvorak, who is ranked No. 89 nationally, dispatched Leung at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, to give Texas Tech back the lead, 2-1. Kilgo then dropped Jiang at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, to make it 3-1 with three matches remaining.
Talaba and Jackson each saw their match go to a third set. Both were on the verge of closing out the match, when Federici survived Cheng, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 5. It was Federici's seventh consecutive victory and her 12th win of the season. Both Talaba and Jackson each abandoned their matches when the victory was secured.
Texas Tech returns to action this weekend, when the Lady Raiders host Wyoming and No. 28 Auburn at the McKeod Tennis Center.
