
Red Raider Tennis Splits First Day

TUCSON, Ariz. - Texas Tech opened the 2015 men's tennis season with an unexpected results, as the Red Raiders split their season-opening doubleheader as a part of the Arizona Kickoff Weekend.
The No. 41 Red Raiders dropped the opener to No. 61 New Mexico, 4-1, but rebounded with a 4-2 win over UC-Irvine in the afternoon.
In the morning, No. 41 Samir Iftikhar topped Texas Tech's No. 28 Felipe Soares to start the match, but Hugo Dojas answered with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hayden Sabatka at No. 2. But then New Mexico answered with wins from Rodolfo Jauregui and Bart Van Leijsen and No. 5 and No. 4. James Hignett closed out the win for New Mexico, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 over Francisco Zambon.
In the afternoon, Soares rebounded with a quick, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1, but UC Irvine counted with a win at No. 3. Texas Tech countered with wins from Hugo Dojas and Connor Curry to take a 3-1 lead. Rafael Davidian pulled it to within one after winning No. 4, but Jolan Cailleau walked away with a three set victory to secure the win for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT, as the Red Raiders will face UC-Irvine and Arizona in the second day of the event.
