Texas Tech senior Francisco Zambon advanced to the Round of 16 at the Rice Fall Invitational.

HOUSTON, Texas - Weather seemed to be the driving factor for the Red Raiders at the Rice Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The 64-man event saw three Red Raiders advance past the first round, as Jolan Caileau, Alex Buzelan and Francisco Zambon picked up early wins.

Cailleau, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, dropped SMU's Julio Olaya, 6-3, 6-1, before losing a marathon match to Rice's David Warren, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).

Buzelan, a freshman from Constanta, Romania, picked up his first collegiate win with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Texas Arlington's Jonathan Gonzalez. But in the Round of 32, Buzelan came up short to the tournament's third-seeded James Malik of Rice. Malik pulled out a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Buzelan.

Zambon, a senior from Brazil, dropped Lamar's Jeandre Hoogenboezem in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 and then bested Nicholls State's Lukas Clemens, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Round of 16. But for the third time the Owls had the answer, as seventh-seeded Adam Gustifson of Rice outlasted Zambon 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).

Freshman Connor Curry fell to Rice's Max Andrews in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) in the Round of 64. Curry, a native of Wichita Falls, bounced back in the consolation Round of 32 to dropp Nebraska's Charlie Shin, 6-4, 6-3. In the Round of 16, Curry had to withdraw with a back injury.

In doubles, both teams advanced past the first round, as the tandem of Cailleau and Buzelan dropped Tulane's Iain Sneddon and Cedric Rutsaert, 6-3, while the duo of Zambon and Curry dropped UTA's Daniel Armengol and Mario Muniesa, 6-4.

Zambon and Curry withrew from the Round of 16 due to Curry's back injury. Cailleau and Buzelan will face Lamar's Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Juuso Laitinen on Sunday.
