Evans Tuitoek took second place, finishing in 18:23.2, to lead the Red Raiders at the Texas A&M Invitational, on Saturday.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas Tech Red Raider country team, aided by a second-place finish from Evans Tuitoek, took fourth place at the Texas A&M Invitational, on Saturday, in College Station, Texas.
The Lady Raider Cross Country team took fifth, with a score of 104.
"Both teams competed hard this week," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "There were several who looked tired due to competing on a muddy course for the second-straight week, but it was still a great experience for this team. This race is something we were able to build into our training."
Tuitoek finished the 6,000 meters in 18:23.2, good for second place, just five seconds off the winner. Clark Blunt was the second Red Raider to finish, taking 23rd, with a time of 19:13.2. Following him was a trio of Red Raiders-Miguel Bautista (19:14.7) in 25th, Daniel Wedell (19:15.3) in 26th and Ebenether Wondaferew (19:15.5) in 27th.
"Evans did a great job with the competition," Murray said. "He hasn't race on this short of a course, but he handled it well. This is another good step in the right direction for him."
On the women's side, Sharlene Nickle led the way, taking 11th place, finishing the 4,000 meter race in 14:32.4. She was closely followed by Jocelyn Caro, who took 12th, with a time of 14:33.6. Nickle and Caro were joined in the top 25 by Erica Brown (15:09.5), who finished 22nd, and Jasmine Torres (15:11.7), who placed 23rd.
The Red Raiders will be back in action Oct. 4, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Invitational.
