Red Raiders in the Major Leagues: Week 10 Update

Tomlinson leads the Eastern League with 49 stolen bases - the next closest in the league has 38.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program started the 2014 Major League Baseball season with several former players on MLB rosters and on Minor League Baseball teams trying to reach the big leagues.
Currently, there are 25 former Texas Tech players who are playing with an MLB organization as a player. Throughout the remainder of the summer, Texas Tech athletics communications will provide weekly updates on former Red Raiders competing at the major league and minor league level.
AJ Ramos (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins)
Ramos posted three scoreless outings last week while making four appearances from Aug. 19-24. His last three outings have all been scoreless while posting three innings with a pair of strikeouts without allowing a walk. Ramos is 5-0 with a 2.01 ERA this season with 54 outings, 53.2 innings, 59 strikeouts and has allowed 36 walks. Ramos pitched four years at Tech, 2006-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 21st round by the Florida Marlins.
Josh Tomlin (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians)
Tomlin made one relief outing last week going one scoreless inning at Minnesota on Aug. 21 with one strikeout. He hasn't allowed an earned run during his last four appearances that totals 8.1 innings since Aug. 8. On the season, in 20 outings (16 starts), he is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA with one complete game, one shutout, 99.1 innings and has 89 strikeouts with just 11 walks. Tomlin pitched one season at Tech in 2006 and was drafted in 2006 in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Chad Bettis (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Triple-A - Colorado Springs Sky Sox)
Bettis has been up in the big leagues and back in Triple-A Colorado Springs several times this season and he is currently with the Sky Sox where he has taken a loss his last two outings, including last night going 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs with three strikeouts and three walks. Bettis is 3-4 in Triple-A this season with a 3.09 ERA with 20 appearances (5 starts), three saves, 55.1 innings, 55 strikeouts and 21 walks allowed. Bettis has also made 21 outings in the big leagues this season. Bettis pitched three seasons at Tech, 2008-2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the second round by the Colorado Rockies.
Bobby Doran (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Triple-A - Charlotte Knights)
Doran, who has 37 career minor league wins, was part of a trade this season going from the Houston Astros organization to the Chicago White Sox - where he joined Triple-A Charlotte. Doran earned the win last week pitching six innings allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts on Aug. 22. He suffered the loss last night on the road allowing four earned runs in five innings with four walks allowed and one strikeout. Doran is 7-6 this season with a 5.43 ERA in 30 outings (18 starts) with 126.0 innings, 76 strikeouts and 52 walks allowed. Doran pitched one season at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the third round by the Houston Astros.

Colt Hynes (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Toronto Blue Jays - Triple-A - Buffalo Bisons)
Hynes, who was recently claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays, has made four appearances - all in relief - since Aug. 19 with four scoreless outings. Overall, Hynes has 10 consecutive scoreless outings dating back to July 28 which covers his last 14 innings pitched. On the season he is 1-3 with a 3.66 ERA in 47 outings with two saves, 59.0 innings, 51 strikeouts and walked 11. Hynes pitched two seasons at Tech, 2006-07, and was drafted in 2007 in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres.

Nathan Karns (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Tampa Bay Rays - Triple-A - Durham Bulls)
Karns ranks second in the International League with 150 strikeouts. He has lost two straight starts while going five innings and 4.1 innings, respectively. He is 9-8 this season in 26 starts with a 4.80 ERA with 140.2 innings, 150 strikeouts and 60 walks allowed. Karns pitched two years at Tech, 2008-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals.

Roger Kieschnick (OF -Arizona Diamondbacks - Triple-A - Reno Aces)
Kieschnick has been in Triple-A and the big leagues off and on the entire season - most recently was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 9. Since returning to the minors Kieschnick has been on fire hitting three home runs over his last six games while posting at least one hit in six of his last nine games and tallying multi-hit games in three of his last six. Last night he went 2-for-3 with a solo home run at home against Omaha. His homer was the last of three straight by the Aces. Kieschnick was a three-year starter for Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the San Francisco Giants.

Dustin Richardson (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels - Triple-A - Salt Lake Bees)
Richardson made four outings since Aug. 19 while two outings were scoreless. His most recent outing on Aug. 26 was scoreless going three innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He is 3-3 in Triple-A this season with a 7.58 ERA in 34 outings with three starts, two saves, 48.2 innings and 55 strikeouts with just 24 walks allowed. Richardson pitched two seasons at Tech, 2005-06, and was drafted in 2006 in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox.

Zach Stewart (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Atlanta Braves - Triple-A - Gwinnett Braves)
Stewart has won his last two starts while going at least six innings in both wins and striking out seven and allowing one earned run on Aug. 26 against Durham. Stewart is 7-4 this season with a 4.68 ERA in 19 outings (13 starts), 100.0 innings, 54 strikeouts and 32 walks allowed. Stewart pitched one season at Tech in 2008 and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Shane Broyles (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Double-A - Tulsa Drillers)
Broyles was recently promoted to Double-A Tulsa after going 2-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 41 relief outings with a save, 63.0 innings, 68 strikeouts and 21 walks allowed. He made his Double-A debut on Sunday going 2.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout allowing three hits. Broyles pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Colorado Rockies.

Daniel Coulombe (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Double-A - Chattanooga Lookouts)
Coulombe was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga after having a stellar season in Class-A Advanced in the California League this season. Coulombe made three outings last week - one scoreless - while posting three innings pitched with five strikeouts and didn't allow a walk. Coulombe pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 25th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
James Leverton (LHP -Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Double-A - Jacksonville Suns)
Leverton is currently on the seven-day disabled list with his most recent outing on July 6. Leverton was up for big-league spring training but has been in Double-A this season where he has made seven relief outings with a 0-1 record, 4.15 ERA, 8.2 innings pitched and has seven strikeouts and three walks allowed. He is one of three Red Raiders from the 2008 MLB Draft class (Roger Kieschnick, Zach Stewart) who remain in professional baseball. Leverton pitched three years at Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the 8th round by the Chicago Cubs.
Reid Redman (RHP - Florida Marlins - Double-A - Jacksonville Suns)
Redman was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game and was recently called back up to Double-A Jacksonville after having a solid season for Class-A Advanced, Jupiter. Redman received good news earlier this week as he was named to the Salt River Rafters roster in the Arizona Fall League - where the top minor league prospects will being a six-week league starting Oct. 7. He has allowed only two earned runs over his last 14 outings dating back to July 18. This past week he struck out two batters in five combined innings allowing just one walk. He is 5-1 in the minors this season with a 2.10 ERA in 42 outings with seven saves, 60.0 innings, 66 strikeouts and 12 walks allowed. Redman played two years at Tech as a third baseman, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 23rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Kelby Tomlinson (SS -San Francisco Giants - Double-A - Richmond Flying Squirrels)
Tomlinson leads the Eastern League with 49 stolen bases and has hit safely in seven of his last nine games. He is batting .325 (13-for-40) his last 10 games while posting five multi-hit games. He is hitting .264 (112-for-424) on the season with 62 runs, nine doubles, six triples, a home run, 31 RBI and has 43 walks. He is 49-of-60 in stolen base attempts. Tomlinson played one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants.

Duke von Schamann (RHP - Starting - Cleveland Indians - Double-A - Akron RubberDucks)
von Schamann has dropped his last two starts while going 9-8 this season with a 4.13 ERA in 26 outings with 22 starts this season. von Schamann has one save, pitched 129.1 innings with 66 strikeouts and 28 walks allowed. von Schamann pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Barrett Barnes (OF -Pittsburgh Pirates - Class A Advanced - Bradenton Marauders)
Barnes was promoted to Class A Advanced Bradenton after batting .313 (5-for-16) in the Gulf Coast League. Barnes was placed on the disabled list following a game on July 21. He is batting .240 (12-for-50) in 17 games this season while playing in Rookie League, Single-A and Class A Advanced. He has nine runs, four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI on the season. Barnes played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brett Bruening (RHP - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Bruening has made a pair of rehab assignments this past week while coming off the disabled list. He made a pair of one-inning appearances this past week with three combined strikeouts allowing just one walk. Bruening played one year at Tech, 2010, and was drafted in 2010 in the 42nd round by the Chicago White Sox.
Jamodrick McGruder (2B - Cincinnati Reds - Single-A - Dayton Dragons)
McGruder, a 2012 All-American at Texas Tech, hit safely in two games last week while going 2-for-5 on Aug. 23. He is batting .240 (81-for-338) with 48 runs, 11 doubles, seven triples, four homers and 27 RBI with 12-of-20 stolen bases. McGruder played three years at Tech, 2010-2012, and was drafted in 2012 in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.

Chris Sadberry (LHP - Starting Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Single-A - Greensboro Grasshoppers)
Sadberry was promoted to Class A Greensboro in the South Atlantic League after making four starts in the New York Penn League for Batavia. Sadberry has continued his solid first pro season having won two of his last three starts. He pitched five innings on Aug. 22 in a loss while allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts. In both Short-Season A and Single-A, Sadberry is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 outings (9 starts) with 40.0 innings, 34 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Sadberry pitched one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins.
Andre Wheeler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Wheeler had his streak of consecutive scoreless innings come to an end during his last outing on Aug. 22 while having now allowed just one earned run during his last 22 innings pitched dating back to July 31 spanning his last six outings. He was impressive in his last outing despite the one earned run allowed while going five innings with seven strikeouts and one walk allowed. He is 3-3 with a 2.92 ERA this season with 27 appearances (15 starts), 92.1 innings, 104 strikeouts and just 31 walks allowed. Wheeler pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox.

Trey Masek (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago Cubs - Short-Season A - Boise Hawks)
Masek, who was held in extended spring training due to injury, has made two relief outings this season with a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and four walks allowed. Masek's first outing came on June 18 when he struck out four in two scoreless innings. Masek pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jerad McCrummen (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dust Devils)
McCrummen, who a Northwest League All-Star, posted a pair of multiple-inning outings last week while having now pitched in two or more innings in four straight appearances. He has three strikeouts in back-to-back relief outings and hasn't allowed an earned run in three of his last four appearances. He is 4-1 this season with a 3.05 ERA in 21 relief outings. He has one save, 38.1 innings pitched, 34 strikeouts and 10 walks allowed. McCrummen pitched three years at Tech, 2011-2013, and was drafted in 2013 in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.

Jonny Drozd (LHP - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Drozd went his first 12 outings of his professional career without allowing an earned run but that streak was ended on Aug. 26 allowing an earned run in one inning with a strikeout. Drozd has still been nothing short of dominating during his brief first season with the Yankees Rookie League team with a 0.57 ERA in 13 outings with 15.2 innings, six saves and 23 strikeouts without allowing a walk. Drozd pitched two years at Tech, 2013-14, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.

Adam Kirsch (OF - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Kirsch returned from the disabled list on Thursday after missing two months due to injury. His return was an impressive performance from a patience standpoint with three walks going 0-for-2 on Thursday. He is batting .333 (5-for-15) with four runs, two doubles, two home runs, four walks and seven RBI with a .474 on-base percentage. Kirsch played one year at Tech, 2014, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Hunter Redman (C - Los Angeles Dodgers - Rookie League - Ogden Raptors)
Redman has now hit safely in seven of his last nine games while going 1-for-3 with a walk on Aug. 19 and going 0-for-3 at Grand Junction on Aug. 25. He is batting .227 (10-for-44) on the season with a double and two home runs with five RBI. Redman played one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
