Texas Tech Postgame Press Conference
Players: Eric Gutierrez, Adam Kirsch, and Chris Sadberry
Talking about the situation in the 9th from the standpoint of you had chances to come through in a situation like that earlier in the game and the struggle, what was different about this situation (9th inning)?
Gutierrez: I have had better at-bats but I was just trying to put the ball on play and try to get a good pitch to hit.
Adam, talk about how you helped the team breakthrough a little bit?
Kirsch: The pitcher started with a fastball and after that pitch I thought to myself that he wasn't going to beat me with that pitch again. So I was looking off-speed, he threw me a fastball again, I got to it and got barrel.
Chris, talk about how those first two innings were a struggle but you were able to get out of them.
Sadberry: I felt that my command was kind of half and half. There was not really command on either side of the play. I just tried to mix my pitches up and be tough in those kinds of situations to get us out and get us back in the dugout.
Adam, was this any kind of reminiscent of some of the struggles against your team and some of the late stuff against OU, talk about some of the lessons learned on those games.
Kirsch: We definitely grow from each game. You don't want to compare any game, each one is different and we have chances every game, we just have to come through and win the ball game.
What does this means for you and for the program to win this game and get a win in the NCAA?
Kirsch: It is a big deal, is motivation pushing us to the next level. We just have to keep growing as a team and keep playing together.
Texas Tech Head Coach
Opening Statement from the game: I think that Columbia really competed well and I really think their coaching staff and guys did a really good job. They took some things away from us early in the game. The outfielders were playing well and took some hits away from us. They do it against a lot of teams and it is a tribute of what they are doing, you can see how they got here and they have done a great job coaching those guys.
The team seemed to struggle early in the game in execution; you had a couple of loaded bases and were unable to come through.
What sticks out in my mind is that we got positive counts to hit. We had great opportunities to get some runs in. In those situations all you can do is really just get a pitch to hit and move on it and as long as we keep creating opportunities and getting in those counts and land of the marginal pitches and get in a good pitch to hit, I like our chances.
Was there something different about Gutierrez at bat that helped you guys come through in the game that you couldn't get earlier in the game?
There was a guy standing on second and it was the bottom of the ninth. So that is a lot different. We had a little momentum there when that long ball landed and him getting the first base. Maybe it is a little different with one than with two out but again, Tyler moved on a good pitch and is all you can ask.
That home run by Adam really helped get the offense going...
Definitely, it was a good swing. When he shows up, it makes it pretty tough. I think that in any baseball team if the middle of your lineup shows up, that puts you in a good situation. That can happen any time and at the same time, their pitcher was really good and did a fine job pitching. Their first guy was pitching in quite a bit. When you get a ball in in a 3-1 count twice, on pretty good hitters, you just tip your hat to him.
How important was it for Sadberry to go so long in the game and then the next pitcher being able to finish it up?
It was a very good job and probably didn't have his best command. I don't know he could, his last start he had a great command. I don't know how he can match that, he is a really good competitor, went out competed and made pitches when he had to.
How does that sets you up for tomorrow regarding to bullpen situation?
We had a guy get tweaked a little bit so we will see as far as that goes. We will have to reevaluate everything tonight, look at it, watch the game this evening and look where we are standing.
