LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Amber Battle scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds as junior Jamie Roe got a late steal in the final seconds to help Texas Tech slip by Houston Baptist, 60-59 on Tuesday at United Supermarkets Arena.
Battle scored in double digits for the sixth time in as many games while fellow starters Kelsi Baker, Minta Spears, Rayven Brooks and Dayo Olabode all added seven points each in the team's 10th win of the season.
Tech (10-2) led by as many as 15 midway through the second half after leading by only three at the break. A quick second half surge out of the first timeout in the second half helped push Tech out to a 54-39 lead with 10:17 to go.
Then Houston Baptist (6-5) put on a run of its own and outscored Tech 17-4 over the next nine minutes to pull within two at 58-56 with 1:06 to go. Battle then hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to give Tech a four-point lead but was forced to leave the game after rolling her ankle when she landed on a defender's foot.
The Huskies did not waste their next opportunity as Tayler Jefferson hit a three to make it a one-point game with 39 seconds remaining. Baker followed with a missed layup but tipped the offensive rebound back out to Spears who was fouled near the top of the key with five seconds remaining, sending the 88-percent free-throw shooter to the line.
But both of Spears' free throws missed and Roe came up with the steal near midcourt in the final seconds to keep HBU from ever getting off a possible game-winning shot.
The win keeps Tech perfect at home this season with a 10-0 record and gave head coach Candi Whitaker her 99th career win.
The Lady Raiders open Big 12 Conference play at home at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday against TCU (8-3). The game will be broadcast regionally on FOX Sports Southwest.
