LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Amber Battle scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help Texas Tech outlast Houston, 60-54 in the championship game of the Athletes in Action Classic at United Supermarkets Arena.
Battle was named to the All-Tournament Team and MVP after posting a double-double for the second time in five games and eighth in her career. She scored 14 of her 19 in the second half. Redshirt sophomore Minta Spears also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Tech (9-2) traded leads twice in the first half while it tried to get into a groove shooting-wise, trailing by as much as seven after a 7-0 run broke a 10-10 tie just past the midway point. Then Battle and Spears started to heat up outside the arc and helped the Lady Raiders go on a 16-4 run the remainder of the half to take a 26-21 lead at the break.
Houston (5-6) got within two twice before Battle took over the game and gave Tech its largest lead with her third 3-pointer of the game to make it 53-43 with 3:28 left. The Lady Raiders hit five of their final six free throws the rest of the way to seal the six-point win.
Tech is now 9-0 at home this season and has won its last five. It's the fifth time in six years Tech has started out non-conference play undefeated on its home floor.
The Lady Raiders will get the next nine days off before returning home on Dec. 30 to finish out non-conference play at 7 p.m., against Houston Baptist (5-4).
