LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Jaelene Hinkle was recognized once again for her work in the classroom Thursday as she was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.
Hinkle, a native of Denver, Colorado, is the first Red Raider in program history to garner the award after compiling a 3.81 grade-point average the past four years in human sciences.
The Big 12 established the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards prior to the 2012-13 academic year. It is presented annually to a student-athlete in each conference sponsored sport following a vote of the league's head coaches.
Hinkle was previously honored as a first team Academic All-American just a few weeks ago, the highest academic honor ever bestowed on a Red Raider. She was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team for a third-straight season as well.
In addition to her work academically, Hinkle also garnered NSCAA second team All-America honors last week after helping lead the Red Raiders to the third round of the NCAA Championship, the furthest Tech had ever advanced in the tournament.
Hinkle is the first Texas Tech student-athlete to earn All-American status for her work on the playing field and then an Academic All-American nod in the same season since former Red Raider baseball greats Clint Bryant and Matt Miller received both awards in 1996.
Hinkle will be part of Texas Tech's commencement ceremonies this weekend as she will earn her degree in human sciences.
