LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Jaelene Hinkle garnered one of the highest academic honors in collegiate athletics Tuesday as she was named a Capital One first team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hinkle, who has compiled a 3.81 grade-point average while majoring in human sciences, is the third Red Raider in program history to be named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA, joining Jennifer Wood (1996) and Hayley Haagsma (2013).
Her award marks the second-straight year where Texas Tech has had a soccer student-athlete honored as a first team Academic All-American after Haagsma received the accolade in 2013. Tech is the only program nationally to have a student-athlete named to the first team in each of the past two seasons.
Hinkle is the only Red Raider in program history to be named an Academic All-American as well as a NSCAA All-American as she was named to the third team in 2013. The NSCAA All-America awards for this season will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
Hinkle, a native of Denver, Colorado, wrapped her illustrious career in scarlet and black this past weekend as she provided the game-tying assist Sunday in what ultimately resulted in a 3-2 loss to Florida in the third round of the NCAA Championship.
The assist was the fourth of the year for Hinkle, who totaled 19 assists over her career which ends the season tied for third all-time in program history. In addition to her work offensively, Hinkle was a steady force for a Red Raider back line that regularly ranked among the top defenses in the country.
With Hinkle leading the Red Raiders on the back line, Tech has recorded 50 wins over the past three seasons, the most among Big 12 programs following the 2014 season. The Red Raiders advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship this past weekend, the furthest Tech has ever gone in the tournament.
