COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas Tech's Felipe Soares reached rare air on Saturday in the Conference Challenge at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center.
Soares, a junior from Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, entered Saturday with a career record of 10-13 against ranked opponents and 0-4 against ITA Top 10 players.
But Soares wasn't fazed as he picked up his first career Top 10 win with a 6-3, 6-3 drubbing of Illinois' No.6 Jared Hiltzik. It was Soares' second Top 20 win this season.
"Felipe has done a good job focusing in on each and every point," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "Despite his record, Jolan (Cailleau) has battled the way I like. We need more players to battle like Felipe and Jolan. I am looking forward to us finishing strong tomorrow."
Soares added a second win on the day with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over LSU's Tam Trinh in the third round. With the two victories, he improved to 7-3 on the season and 3-3 against ranked opponents.
The win also marked the highest rated victory in program history, eclipsing Adrian Prpic's 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) triumph over Texas' No. 7 Travis Helggeson in 2007 and Raony Carvalho's 2010 victory over Wisconsin's No. 7 Moritz Bauman, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
In other action, Hunter Holman picked up a straight set win over Illinois' Toshiki Matsuya, 7-6, 6-2, and Evan Nix topped Texas A&M's Max Montague, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round.
In the third round, Francisco Zambon defeated LSU's Simon Freund, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, and Nick Melott upended LSU's John Michael Busch, 6-3, 6-4
Texas Tech returns to action on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
